BOX SCORE 2 WARRENSBURG, Mo. -
Jenelle Trautmann gave up just one earned run to carry the Vikings to a pair of road wins at Central Missouri on Thursday afternoon. Augustana (17-8) held on to a 2-1 lead to take game one and Chelsi Winscowski's two-run double gave the Vikings a 3-1 win in game two over the Jennies (15-15).
Game One
Carly Peterson scored both runs for Augsutana to give
Jenelle Trautmann enough of a cushion as the Vikings defeated Central Missouri in game one of a doubleheader, 2-1.
Peterson led the Vikings with two hits and Trautmann threw all seven innings, scattering three hits and striking out 10. Peterson led off the third and fifth innings with singles each time. Trautmann battled with control in game one, walking eight and hitting three more.
The Vikings struck first in the third inning after Peterson circled the bases aided by a Central Missouri miscue. Peterson reached on a single to right center and was moved to second on a sacrifice.
Lindsay Spanton didn't get the RBI, but she hit a ball at shortstop and the UCM fielder's error allowed Peterson to score.
Like a broken record, the Vikings scored again in the fifth after Peterson singled and Spanton knocked her in by way of an error and Augustana was up 2-0. Trautmann had finagled her way out of several jams early in the game, but the Jennies broke through in the bottom of the fifth with a run to cut the Viking lead to 2-1.
Trautmann struck out the first two Jennies of the sixth inning but then struggled to find the strike zone, walking the bases loaded. The sophomore pitcher then fanned Emily Bybee-King to squelch the Central Missouri late-game threat. The Jennies stranded 14 runners throughout the game and Augustana took advantage of the Jennies' clutch hitting woes.
Game Two
Trautmann was a force on the mound once again as she led the Vikings to a 3-1 win to complete the road sweep of Central Missouri. The Spanton and Trautmann each racked up a pair of hits and Winscowski drove in the game-winning run on a double.
Trautmann now owns a 16-5 record in the circle and gave up just one run in 14 innings today.
After two scoreless innings, the Vikings broke through with some much-needed production from the bottom half of the lineup. After a single, Spanton advanced to third on a Truatmann double, but was tagged out at home when
Jordan Schaffer grounded into a fielder's choice. Trautmann and Schaffer were pushed to third when
Erin Kempf walked setting up the bottom of the lineup.
Chelsi Winscowski entered game two batting just .214 and just six runs batted in after a season in which she batted .345 knocking in 29 runs. The senior centerfielder smashed a ball down the right field line to score Trautmann and Schaffer for her second double of the year. The Jennies answered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the third to cut the Augustana lead to 2-1.
Augustana tacked one more on, capitalizing on a UCM error.
Jenny Brown found her way on from a throwing error by the Jennie third baseman and advanced to second on the errant throw. Spanton wasted no time and doubled Brown in to stretch the Viking lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning adding a little insurance for Trautmann to close out the game.
The Vikings sealed their 3-1 win after Trautmann struck out two of the final three hitters and forced a fly-out to Winscowski end the game.
The Vikings resume NSIC action when they host Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State on April 6 and 7 with both doubleheaders starting at noon.
