BOX SCORE ROCHESTER, Minn. –
Theresa McMahon's second-inning solo home run was the deciding factor as Augustana eliminated Wayne State 1-0. The Vikings advance in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament with a 32-14 record and the Wildcats' season is up in the air with a 28-16 mark.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings as
Carley Pickett and WSC starting pitcher Kelcie Bormann were both using a wide array of pitches to keep the hitters at bay.
Theresa McMahon changed that when she led the bottom of the third off with a home run to center field.
The Vikings had two runners erased at the plate while looking to expand their slight 1-0 lead early in the game.
Erin Kempf was tagged out trying at home after attempting to steal home on a passed ball in the second and Pickett was out, attempting to score on a ground ball in the fourth.
Pickett worked her way out of a jam in the fifth when Lexie Loos reached second on a throwing error after an infield single. The Vikings then placed the first two batters on in the fifth, but
Lindsay Spanton was tagged out at home on a
Emily Heinz flyout to right field. Kylee Simpson's throw from right field erased the Vikings halted the Vikings' scoring threat.
Pickett closed out the game in commanding fashion. The freshman southpaw sat down the final eight Wildcat batters and earned her seventh win of the year.
The Vikings will face Minot State to advance to the NSIC tournament finals at approximately 8:45 p.m. Follow live stats
