BOX SCORE TOPEKA, Kan. – It took 109 minutes, but Augustana soccer pulled out a 1-0 win in double overtime on Friday night.
Katie Hurd scored the golden goal with a 1:16 left on clock to move Augustana to 2-1 on the year and drop Washburn to 1-3 on the season.
In the first half, the Vikings came out aggressive, registering eight shots in the period, four on goal. Augustana opened the game with a barrage of shots in the first 14 minutes of the game, then again at the end of the half. Seniors
Kara Bartels and
Maren Werth each fired two shots in the half. Hurd also recorded one shot on goal.
Washburn was unable to do much offensively in the first half, only recording two shots with one being on goal.
The first half also saw some physical play with a total of seven fouls committed in the first 45 minutes - four on the Ichabods and three on the Vikings.
Augustana was unable to find the back of the net in the second half, despite keeping up the offense by registering seven shots. The Vikings also maintained their stout defense in the half, allowing only two shots in the period. The teams battled to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.
In the first overtime, each team was able to only get one shot, preserving the scoreless tie for 10 more minutes.
Augustana saw the late-game heroics come during the 109th minute of action. Hurd took a pass from senior
Aleisha Oehlerking and scored the game winner from 10 yards out on the left side of the field. Hurd's blast into the upper right corner capped off a powerful offensive night from the Vikings.
Augustana set a season high with 18 shots on Friday night, with Werth leading the way with a 2013-best seven shots, one short of her career high. Hurd recorded three shots, and Bartels and
Payton Pry each finished with two.
Augustana closes out its road trip this Sunday at Wayne State at 1 p.m. The game will be the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams.
