Vikings explode for six goals in win against Dragons

BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana gave its fans quite the show Saturday with a 6-1 dismantling of MSU Moorhead in its home opener at Morstad Field.  The Vikings moved to 4-1 (2-0 in the NSIC) – their best start in team history - while the Dragons fell to 0-4 (0-2 in the NSIC).

Aleisha Oehlerking led the way for Augustana with two goals and one assist.  The Sioux Falls, S.D. native's five points were just one off her career high.

Maren Werth also scored two goals - her third and fourth of the season- in the win, while tallying six shots in the match.  Werth's two goals are the most the Bloomington, Minn. native has scored in a game in her career.

MSU Moorhead made things interesting in the first half, scoring in the seventh minute of regulation on a Cara Zastrow goal, to take a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings took control of the game after that with Oehlerking scoring her first goal of the contest on a Taylor Brownrigg pass in the 13th minute of the first half.  The senior forward netted the goal from seven yards out.  Oehlerking then recorded the second game-winning goal of her career just four minutes later after talking an Ellie Westemeyer cross and putting it past the goalkeeper for the goal.

Kara Bartels kept the Viking barrage going in the first half, scoring her first goal of the year in the 20th minute of the half.  Bartels was assisted on the play by Oehlerking, who recorded her third assist of the season.  Augustana closed out the fast-paced half by scoring its fourth goal in the 28th minute of the match on a Haley Berner goal.  Berner notched her first goal since 2011 on the play with Jessica Madson getting the assist.

The Vikings finished the first half with 21 shots.

The second half started off with a bang as Werth netted her first goal of the game just 43 seconds into the period.  Werth took a pass from Katie Hurd and fired it in from right in front of the goal.  Augustana scored its final goal of the contest in the 64th minute of the match.  Werth took a Libby Nelson pass and put it in the back of the net from six yards out.

The Vikings six goals were just one short of the all-time single-game record of seven goals scored in a game back in 2004.

Augustana's 41 shots were the second most shots in a game in team history.

The Vikings return to the field tomorrow against Northern State at Morstad Field.  The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
