Vikings push streak to five games with victory over Wolves

BOX SCORE

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana handed Northern State its first loss of the year on Sunday, winning 3-1 in front of the home crowd at Morstad Field.  The Vikings advanced to 5-1 (3-0 NSIC) with the win, while the Wolves fell to 5-1 (2-1 NSIC).

With the victory, Augustana did something it hadn't done since 2008:  win five-straight games.  The Vikings 5-1 start to the season continues to build on what has been the best start in team history through six games.

For Augustana, Aleisha Oehlerking continued her great play from Saturday by scoring the first goal of the contest at the 19th minute of regulation.  For Oehlerking, it was her third goal of 2013.  Taylor Brownrigg setup the play with a through-ball to Oehlerking, who struck it off the goalkeeper's hands and into the net for the goal.  Brownrigg picked up her third assist of the season on the play.

Stephanie Stevens got into the action next for the Vikings.  The junior from Ankeny, Iowa scored her first goal of the year in the 35th minute of the first half.  Stevens' goal, the game-winner, came off a Payton Pry-pass that the midfielder scored from just inside the 18-yard box.   The goal was the first for Stevens in her collegiate career.

Maren Werth gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead when she volleyed Caroline Renner's long serve into the top-right corner of the net.  For Werth, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season, and now has scored in four of the six Augustana games this year.

The Vikings stout defense gave up a season-low one shot in the first half of the contest.

The Wolves finally broke through and scored at the 64th minute of regulation, cutting the lead to 3-1 in favor of Augustana.  Bobyye Pendleton got her second goal of the season off her own penalty kick that was deflected by Ashley Limmer that Pendleton put in off the deflection.

Northern State was unable to produce anymore offense after that, giving the Vikings the 3-1 victory.

Augustana has now scored 17 goals through six games in 2013, matching their season total from last year.

The Vikings takes the field again next Saturday with a matchup against Bemidji State (5-1, 2-1 NSIC) at 1 p.m. on Morstad Field.
