BOX SCORE SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana wrapped up their four-game homestand over the last two weeks in style on Sunday with a 2-0 shutout victory over Minnesota, Crookston. With the win, the Vikings remained unbeaten in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and moved their season record to 7-1 (5-0 NSIC). The Golden Eagles dropped to 2-5-1 (0-4-1 NSIC) in 2013.
The shutout was the second on the season for the Vikings, their last one coming in a 1-0 victory over Washburn on Sept. 13.
The first half saw both teams able to generate scoring chances and get shots up, but neither team was able to convert early. The Vikings finally capitalized on a scoring opportunity in the 39th minute of the first half when defender
Julie Reinsnes, a sophomore, was able to score the first goal of her collegiate career, giving the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Reinsnes took a
Stephanie Stevens corner kick and netted it into the right side of the goal from six yards out. For Stevens, it was her second assist of the year.
Augustana held Minnesota, Crookston to only six shots in the first half. The Vikings were able to get 14 shots up in the half.
In the second half,
Katie Hurd delivered the highlight of the game with her goal in the 66th minute of regulation. Hurd dribbled past the Golden Eagles' defense and fired a shot past the keeper from 20 yards out, giving Augustana a 2-0 lead, effectively putting the game out of reach. For the Grenta, Neb. native, it was her second goal of 2013, and her eighth point of the season.
Minnesota, Crookston was able to find some offense in the second half, taking nine shots in the period. The Vikings fired 10 shots in the half.
For Augustana,
Ashley Limmer recorded her fifth career shutout for the Vikings, tying her for third-place all-time in Augustana history.
Hurd led the way with five shots, while
Maren Werth and
Payton Pry each had three shots.
The Vikings' seven wins this year have already eclipsed 2012's win total of six.
Augustana takes to the road next week for two games. First up is St. Cloud State (3-4-1, 0-4-1 NSIC) on Friday at 3 p.m. The Vikings finish up the road trip with Minnesota Duluth (5-2, 4-1 NSIC) on Sunday at noon.
