Vikings surge past Huskies late with pair of goals in win

BOX SCORE

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.
– The Augustana soccer team used a late flurry of goals in the final 12 minutes to overcome a one-goal deficit and go on to win 2-1 against St. Cloud State on Saturday at Morstad Field. The Vikings jumped to 9-2 (7-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference), while the Huskies dropped to 3-8 (2-6 NSIC) on the year.

Augustana's leading scorer Payton Pry struck again in the victory, scoring the equalizer in the 79th minute of regulation to tie the match up at 1-1.  It was the Lawton, Iowa native's eighth goal of the year.

Freshman Mackenzie Main provided the late-game heroics on the day, netting the game-winning goal less than four minutes after Pry's at the 82:10 mark. It was the first collegiate goal of the midfielder's career for the Vikings.

Ashley Limmer made four saves in net for Augustana while picking up her ninth win of 2014, just one off the team record of 10 shared by her and former Viking Amanda Wagner.

Both teams were caught in a stalemate in the first 45 minutes of play, resulting in a 0-0 tie going into halftime. Augustana had some scoring opportunities early in the half, but just couldn't take advantage and push one past SCSU's Kenzie Hanzlik.

The Vikings did hold a 9-3 advantage in shots over St. Cloud State in the first half.

The Huskies made things interesting almost midway through the second half when they took a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute on a Taige Thoreson goal. Thoreson was able to connect on a shot from the right side of the box and put it over Limmer's reach into the left corner of the net.

Augustana, undeterred, kept attacking and showed its resilience late, getting the equalizer from Pry at the 78:22 mark. Ellie Westemeyer dished out her first assist this season after connecting on a pass to Pry, who scored it moments later from just inside 18 yards of the box to tie things up at 1-1.

The Vikings got their big break just a few short minutes later when Main recorded the game-winner off a good cross from Annie Thoresen -- who was credited with her team-leading sixth assist of the year on the play.

The Augustana defense was able to hold the lead up the rest of the way to give the Vikings the 2-1 victory and remain unbeaten this season at home.

Up next for Augustana is a showdown with Minnesota Duluth (4-6, 4-3 NSIC) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Morstad Field.
