Trey Heid throws for six touchdowns to lead Vikings past Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – Augustana's Trey Heid tied a single game school record with six touchdown passes as the Vikings used a last-minute drive to defeat Wayne State College 52-48 on Saturday. The Vikings (4-3, 1-2 NSIC South) trailed by three with 1:12 to play and Heid led his team on a seven-play 59-yard drive ending with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Hayes to snap a two-game losing skid. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak to Wayne State (4-3, 2-1 NSIC South) for the Vikings.

Heid tied a single game NCAA Division II record throwing five touchdown passes in the second quarter. The last player to throw five touchdown passes in a single quarter was Valdosta State's Dusty Bonner who threw five in the second quarter of a game against Ouachita Baptist on Nov. 4, 2000.

Hayes had a monster game for the Vikings, hauling in a career-high three touchdown receptions, and scored another touchdown recovering a fumble in the end zone. Hayes caught six passes for a career-high 74 yards.

Matt Heller hauled in a career-high 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings as Heid finished the game with a career-high 339 passing yards and six touchdown passes. Matt Gerry also caught a touchdown passes and finished with 63 yards on five receptions.

Augustana gained 500-plus yards of total offense for the fourth time this season, finishing with 525, including a season-high 339 yards through the air. The Vikings rushed for 186 yards being led by CJ Ham's 92 rushing yards on 20 carries. Dajon Newell added 74 yards on the ground on 14 attempts.

Heid led the Vikings on an impressive run in the second quarter, throwing six touchdown passes to give Augustana a 35-7 halftime lead. The Vikings made quick work of the second quarter scores with four of the five scoring drives taking less than two minutes, including scoring drives of one and two plays.

Wayne State would not go away quietly, scoring 41 second-half points, to put Augustana on its heels. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game on a two-yard touchdown run by Chad Koch that capped-off a 99-yard drive. Wayne State converted a two-point conversion to take a 48-45 lead with 1:12 remaining in the game.

That is when Heid went back to work leading the Vikings on a 59-yard game winning drive that was set up with great field position after a 38-yard kick return by Justin Greenway. Greenway returned six kicks for 136 yards, including a career-long 38 yard return, while brother Jason Greenway returned two kickoffs for 37 yards.

The biggest play of the game-winning drive came on a third down and 10 conversion when Heid found Nick Lee for a 30-yard reception to get the Vikings set up at the Wayne State 18 yard line. Two plays later Hayes hauled in his third touchdown catch of the game to give the Vikings a 52-48 lead.

Ben Skelly would stop any thoughts of a Wayne State comeback as he intercepted a Zach Osborn pass with 5 seconds left in the game to seal the victory for the Vikings. Skelly finished the game with five tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Brandon Mohr led the Vikings with 12 tackles, including nine solo, and a fumble recovery.

Augustana returns home and will stay there for two weeks as the Vikings host Minnesota State Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. at Kirkeby-Over Stadium. The Vikings will then play their final home game of the 2014 season against Winona State on Nov. 1.
