MANKATO, Minn. – No. 22 Augustana soccer had its three-game winning streak come to an end in a 5-1 loss to No. 1 Minnesota State on Sunday at The Pitch. The Vikings dropped to 11-3 (9-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) with the loss. The Mavericks' record remained perfect at 14-0 (11-0 NSIC) with the win.
Stephanie Stevens gave Augustana its lone goal of the match – her third straight match with a goal – in the in the 78th minute of regulation on a penalty kick.
MSU had four different players score their five goals on the day.
Minnesota State's high-powered offense was just too much for the Vikings defense on a bright and sunny afternoon, which allowed a season-high 35 shots, 15 on goal.
Augustana finished the match with 10 shots of their own, four on goal.
Samantha Arnold led the Vikings with three shots on the day.
Freshman
Taylor Machacek got the majority of minutes in net for the Vikings, replacing an injured
Ashley Limmer in the 33rd minute of the first half. Machacek displayed some of her talents in the loss, making several highlight-reel worthy saves.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 advantage at the 15:08 mark on an Emily Moris goal. Moris was assisted on the play by Kiana Nickel.
A goal by MSU's leading scorer Korey Kronforst in 23rd minute made it a two-goal match. It was the junior's 11th score of the year.
Nickel and Moris then teamed up again, this time reversing roles, to make it 3-0 at the 27:16 mark in favor of Minnesota State.
Augustana was able to hold their ground the rest of the half, keeping it a three-score game going into the break.
Dani Savino recorded her eighth goal of 2014 in the 63rd minute for the Mavericks. Kronforst was credited with the assist on the goal.
Nickel pushed the MSU lead to five at the 70:31 mark in the second half.
Stevens got the Vikings on the scoreboard in the 78th minute on a penalty kick to make it 5-1.
Augustana returns to action next weekend with two home matches. First up, a meeting with Minot State on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Vikings wrap up the weekend on Sunday by facing off with the University of Mary. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
