Vikings tamed by No. 11 Wildcats in four sets

WAYNE, NEB. – Augustana College volleyball fell to 11th-ranked Wayne State in four sets with scores of 25-19, 24-26, 22-25, and 16-25 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup Tuesday night.

With the loss, the Vikings dropped the 15-9 (8-8 NSIC), while the Wildcats improved to 21-4 (13-3 NSIC) with the victory.

Pacing Augustana's offense was senior Courtney Ysker posting her 13th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 12 digs.

Brittany Cech finished the night recording her fifth double-double of the 2014 season tabbing 13 kills and 12 digs. Ashley Wilson added 11 kills respectively.

Setter Marissa Johnson directed the offense tabbing her 14th double-double of the season with 43 assists and 20 digs.

Tahlyr Banks rounded out the defensive effort tying her career-best 30 digs.

In the first set, Wayne State started off on a 4-1 lead. Two consecutive attack errors from the Wildcats, followed by a kill from Cech allowed the Vikings to tie the first set at 8 apiece. Two straight points from Cech and Wilson gave Augustana their first lead of the set pushing ahead 13-10. The Wildcats went on a 4-1 run cutting its deficit to only three points behind the Vikings with a score of 21-18. Augustana tallied the final four points to take the first set 25-19. Cech and Ysker led the team with five kills apiece.

The Vikings and Wildcats were all tied at 5-5 before Wayne State jumped ahead taking the next two points to lead 7-5. Augustana went on a 4-0 run to build their lead to 10-9. Both teams followed by tying nine different time before Wayne State took the lead 22-20 forcing Augustana to take a timeout. A service ace from the Wildcats and a kill from Cech allowed the Vikings to bring the score to 22-22. Wayne State put an end to the run powering ahead to take the second set, 26-24

Both team went into intermission tied 1-1 in the match.

Augustana took control early out of intermission leading 6-3 in the third set. The Wildcats went on an 11-1 run jumping ahead for the first time with a score of 14-10. The Vikings looked to halt the momentum going on a 5-1 run to only trail Wayne State by three points. The Wildcats responding jumping to a 23-19 advantage over Augustana taking the third set, with a score of 25-22.

In the fourth and final set, Wayne State was able to jump out to a 9-5 advantage over the Vikings. Wilson tallied two consecutive points to bring Augustana within two points, but Wayne State continued to surge ahead, using a 5-1 run to arrive at 21-14. The Wildcats never looked back taking the fourth and final set 25-16.

The Vikings wrap up the week on the road, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn. on Friday, Oct. 31 to face the Huskies in another conference matchup with a start time of 7 p.m. Followed by heading to Duluth, Minn. to play the second-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 1. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
