No.16 Augustana volleyball loses in top-25 matchup against No.24 Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 16 Augustana College volleyball drops in four sets to No. 24 Northern State Saturday afternoon in the Elmen Center with score of 28-26, 19-25, 17-25, and 23-25 in the top-25 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchup.

With the loss, the Vikings dropped to 12-4 (5-3 NSIC), while the Wolves improved to 12-4 (5-3 NSIC).

Courtney Ysker led Augustana with her eighth double-double of the season recording 18 kills and 10 digs.

Sophomore Bailey Koch followed Ysker's performance with 12 kills, while Ashley Wilson added 10.

Setter's Marissa Johnson and Anna Sykora combined for 55 assists.

Freshman defensive specialist Tahlyr Banks had a team-best 17 digs, while Becca Finley added four block assists.

The Vikings dominated in the first set jumping out to an early 10-7 lead. Three back-to-back kills from Ysker pushed Augustana ahead 14-10 forcing Northern State to take a timeout. The Wolves respond tallying seven out of the next nine points, which tied the set at 18 apiece. Both teams went on eight different runs before the Vikings took the first set 28-26. Ysker led Augustana with nine kills.

Northern State regained focus in the second set going on an early 3-0 run to push ahead 12-8. The Vikings respond with Wilson having a solo block at the net to put Augustana down by only two points. The Wolves went back on a 4-0 run, securing the second set 25-19.

Both teams headed into intermission tied at 1-1 in the match.

Northern State continued to dominate in the third set going on an early 12-5 lead. Two back-to-back kills from Koch and Banks allowed the Vikings to only trail the Wolves by five points. Northern State took three more points to push their lead to 21-13, never looking back, taking the set 25-17.

Augustana came out strong in the fourth set leading the Wolves 15-11. Northern State went on a 3-0 run, but the Vikings responded with three straight kills from Ysker and Wilson to push ahead 18-14. The Wolves came back tying the game at 22 and closed out the set with three final points to take the set 25-23, securing the victory in the top-25 matchup between the two teams, .

Augustana will hit the road next weekend to take on Minot State on Oct. 10 and closing out the road trip at U-Mary on Oct.11.
