SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana's
Dajon Newell laid it all out on the line in his final game at Kirkeby-Over Stadium rushing for 119 yards and two touchdowns while also catching seven passes for 37 yards and a score as the Vikings defeated Winona State University 33-8 on Senior Day on Saturday.
Newell also went over 3,000 rushing yards for his career and sits at 3,095 career yards to go along with 26 career rushing touchdowns. Augustana improved to 5-4 on the season, including 2-3 in South Division play as Winona State fell to 4-5, 1-4 in the South.
CJ Ham rushed for 120 yards on 22 carries for Augustana marking the first time with two 100-yard rushers in a game since Ham and Newell did so against Upper Iowa on Oct. 13, 2012.
The Vikings nearly pitched their third shutout of the season after holding Winona State out of the end zone until just over three minutes into the fourth quarter. Augustana held the Warriors to just 220 yards of total offense, including just 75 rushing yards. The Viking defense forced four turnovers this afternoon picking up four interceptions.
Augustana's front seven kept the pressure on Winona State all afternoon as the Vikings finished the day with six tackles for loss, including two sacks.
Brandon Mohr led the Vikings with 10 tackles while
Trevor Naasz finished with four tackles, including a sack.
Augustana stole the momentum on the first play of the game when
Jordan Johnson stepped in front of a Jack Nelson pass for his second interception of the season to set the Vikings up in Warrior territory. The Vikings drive stalled at the Winona State 10 yard line and
Lucas Wainman drilled the left upright on a 27-yard field goal attempt and the Warriors got the ball back at their own 20.
On Winona's next offensive possession the Vikings forced them to punt and
Trey Heid followed by leading the Vikings on a 10-play 94-yard scoring drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to
Charlie Hayes.
Heid finished the game 18 of 39 for 229 yards and two touchdowns while throwing just his second interception of the season.
Another quick Winona State offensive possession led to Augustana's second score of the game which came on a 28-yard field goal by Wainman that gave the Vikings a 10-0 lead with one minute left in the first quarter.
The Warriors moved the ball into Augustana territory on its next drive but would come up empty after
Nate Kirby broke through the line and blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt that set up another scoring drive for the Vikings.
Twelve plays later Newell found the end zone for the first time on the afternoon catching a Heid pass for a 12 yard score that gave Augustana a 17-0 lead with 6:48 left in the first half.
Augustana got the ball back with 57 second remaining in the first half and drove down to the Winona State 25 yard line before the Vikings were called for an unsportsmanlike penalty for blocking without a helmet that stalled the drive at the WSU 41. The Vikings took the 17-0 lead into halftime.
The Vikings came out fast in the third quarter going the length of the field before turning the ball over on downs going for it on fourth and short at the Winona State 15 yard line. Winona State picked up a first down on the first play of its next drive but was called for offensive pass interference and the Vikings forced them to punt which set them up in Warrior territory.
Six plays later Newell plunged into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game, his first rushing score, giving Augustana a 24-0 lead with 3:51 left in the third quarter.
Winona State got on the board early in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jack Nelson to Cameron Johnson and made the score 24-8 after a successful two-point conversion attempt.
Wainman hit his second field goal of the game, a 19-yarder, with 5:47 remaining in the game to push Augustana's lead to 27-8 and Newell dove in from two yards out to give the Vikings a 33-8 lead with 49 seconds left after
Jordan Determan intercepted the fourth pass of the game for the Vikings.
Augustana finishes the home portion of its season with a 2-3 record and will be on the road for its final two games. The Vikings travel to St. Paul, Minn. next Saturday to take on Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m. before closing-out the regular season at Southwest Minnesota State on Nov. 15.
