SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana women's basketball used a long-range barrage from deep in a 98-59 victory over Presentation College on Saturday at the Elmen Center. The Vikings' record improved to 2-0 with the win, while the Saints remained at 0-3.
Shaunteva Ashley continued her terrific start to the year, scoring a game-high 24 points. The senior also pulled down seven rebounds, and handed out four assists in the win. Ashley has really made it a point early this season to find her young teammates and set them up with easy looks, as she is averaging 6.5 assists and no turnovers through the first two games of the year.
Allie Koehn continued her hot shooting from deep, making another five 3s in the game as part of her 17-point performance on the evening. The Brandon, S.D. native has now connected on 11 of 19 (57.9 percent) from behind the 3-point line this year for Augustana.
Presley O'Farrell gave the Vikings a great spark off the bench with 12 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks in 16 minutes.
Chelsey Guetter had a nice game, playing a point-forward role and dishing out six assists to go along with six points for Augustana.
PC's Rachel Fuhrmann led the way for her team with 17 points in the loss. Fuhrmann also grabbed 10 boards in 30 minutes of play.
Jackie Miller also had 14 points for Presentation on 5-of-12 shooting in the game.
The Saints were held to 35.6 percent (21 for 59) shooting on the night, while the Vikings shot 41.8 percent.
Augustana knocked down a season-most 14 3-pointers in the contest.
The Vikings also showcased their great ball movement with a season-high 27 assists in the victory.
Augustana's five turnovers were also a new season low.
The Vikings jumped on the Saints early in the game, building a 19-point lead in a little over 10 minutes into the first half with some strong long-range shooting by their players. Augustana drained an impressive 40.9 percent (9 of 22) from three in the half.
PC's Furhmann tried to keep the contest respectable, scoring eight of Presentation's 23 points in the first 20 minutes, but it was just too little to thwart the Vikings' high-speed offense as the Saints went into the half trailing 49-23.
The Vikings got their 49 points mainly from deep, finishing the first half shooting only 36.9 percent (17-46) from the field.
The second half saw Augustana find its shooting stroke, going 21 of 45 (46.7 percent) over the final 20 minutes.
The Vikings were still able to get their high-paced offense going, matching their first-half output of 49 points to finish with 98 in the game.
A tough, swarming defense by Augustana was too much for PC to make a run to try and make it competitive in the second half as the Vikings picked up the win easily.
A True Floor GeneralAshley now has 13 assists and no turnovers through the first two games of the season. The former Roosevelt High standout has made a real effort to get the younger players involved in the offense and find them easy shots.
Everyone Loves the Long BallAugustana is averaging 12.5 made 3-pointers a game early in the year, a good sign that teams that zone will have a hard time sticking to their game plan for a full 40 minutes down the road once conference play starts up.
Up NextThe Vikings hit the hardwood again on Wednesday for a game with Dakota Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. This will be the first game at Augustana's new home site the Sioux Falls Arena this season.
