Men's basketball picks up exhibition win over Wisconsin-River Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
Augustana College men's basketball overcame an 11-point second-half deficit to defeat the University of Wisconsin-River Falls 81-69 in overtime on Saturday night at the Elmen Center. Daniel Jansen registered a double-double to lead the Vikings with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals.
 
Ethan Guske, Casey Schilling and Alex Richter joined Jansen in double-figures. Guske finished with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Schilling finished with 14 points, eight rebounds five assists, two steals and a block while Richter finished 4 of 8 from the field, picking up 10 points.
 
River Falls, who was led in scoring by Jon Christensen, who scored 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds, led by as much as six points in the first half but were never able pull away as the two teams went into the locker room tied at 30 at the half.
 
The Falcons started the second half on a 9-1 run to take an eight-point lead at 39-31 and with 12:49 remaining in the game held an 11-point 48-37 lead after a 3-pointer by Garret Pearson. Augustana chipped away slowly at the lead but were never able to take it over.
 
Schilling connected on a 3-point-play scoring on a fastbreak layup and hitting his free throw to tie the game at 65 with 1:32 to play. Both teams missed a 3-pointer on their next possessions and the Falcons missed a runner with 12 seconds to play. Augustana called a timeout with nine seconds left in the game but was not able to get a good look and the game went into overtime.
 
It was all Augustana in the overtime period as the Vikings out-scored the Falcons 16-4 in the extra frame to pick up an 81-69 victory in their lone exhibition contest of the season.
 
Augustana opens the regular season next Friday, Nov. 14, taking on Washburn University in the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase. Tipoff between the Vikings and Ichabods is set for 8 p.m. The Vikings will then take on Pittsburg State University at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
