ST. CLOUD, Minn. –
Jordan Schaffer hit a solo home run with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to lift No. 8 Augustana (6-2) to a 3-2 win over No. 25 Emporia State on Sunday afternoon. Carly Pickett held Emporia State (10-3) to just one hit over the final three innings to earn her first win of the season in the circle.

Pickett tossed all seven innings and struck out four batters with no walks. Schaffer finished the day going 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Abby Chandler came up with a big hit for the Vikings in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out two-RBI double which tied the game at 2-2.

Emporia State plated two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning to start the scoring in the game and take a 2-0 lead. After a leadoff double by Tricia Vogel, Jessica Gragg reached on an error by Augustana's Sarah Kennedy and Vogel was able to come around to score from second on the errant throw.

Gragg advanced to third on a ground ball out and then scored when Hannah Weingartner drove her in with a single to give the Hornets a two-run lead early.

Augustana had left four runners on base through three innings and had two on with two outs in the top of the fourth inning when Chandler delivered a clutch two-RBI double to tie the game at 2-2. Schaffer started the two-out rally for the Vikings with a single and was followed by Maddie Merriam who walked to put runners on first and second for Chandler.

The Vikings took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Schaffer, her first home run of the season and career. Before Schaffer's homer, Carly Peterson walked but was thrown out trying to steal second.

That would be enough for Augustana to pick up the win as Pickett allowed just one base runner in the final two innings as the leadoff hitter reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth. The sophomore left-handed pitcher set the Hornets down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Augustana is playing its final game at the Husky Dome Classic in St. Cloud, Minn. against Missouri Western State. Live stats can be viewed HERE.
