LAS VEGAS, Nev. – No. 22 Augustana racked up 10 hits and scored 12 runs in a 12-2 win over Black Hills State at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas, Nev. Friday night. Augustana (3-0) used a seven-run bottom of the fourth inning to down BHSU (0-2) by the 10-run rule.
Three Vikings had multiple hits in the game, including
Erin Kempf, who had a career-high two doubles in the game. Kempf finished 2 for 3 at the plate while matching her career-high with three RBI for Augustana.
Jenelle Trautmann drove in two runs for the third straight game going 2 for 3 with two singles.
Carly Peterson finished the game going 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI for the Vikings.
Karlee Koopman (1-0) earned her first career win in the circle for Augustana tossing all five innings while allowing just two runs on two hits. She struck out two batters and walked just one, facing 17 batters in the win.
Black Hills State started the scoring in the contest taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a two-RBI triple by Sara Schmid. That would be the only scoring the Yellowjackets would do in the game.
Augustana evened things up at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI double by Kempf. Kempf scored the tying run later in the inning scoring on a throwing error by the BHSU shortstop.
The Vikings extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs on three hits. Kempf delivered the big blow with a two-out, two-RBI double.
Koopman gave up a single in the top of the fourth, Black Hills State's second of the game, but she set the next three batters down in order heading into Augustana's big inning. The Vikings scored seven runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth to go in front 12-2 putting the 10-run rule into affect after the Vikings got three straight outs in the top of the fifth.
