Five-run sixth inning leads No. 22 Augustana past Adams State

LAS VEGAS, Nev . –
No. 22 Augustana scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit and defeat Adams State 7-3 in its second game of the Desert Stinger on Friday night. Augustana(2-0) opened the tournament with a 7-6 win over top-ranked and defending national champion Central Oklahoma earlier today.

Trailing 3-2 with two innings to play, the Vikings went for five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the comeback win over Adams State (0-2). Caitlin Nichol had a great game at the dish going 3 for 3 out of the leadoff spot with three singles. Mackenzie Alstott finished the game 2 for 2 at the plate scoring two runs.

Sarah Kennedy and Jenelle Trautmann each had a hit and drove in a couple of runs for Augustana while Carly Peterson went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Adams State got most of its production out of its cleanup hitter as Erika Escedy went 2 for 3 with two solo home runs. Carley Pickett held Adams State to just three hits in the contest tossing 5.1 innings to gain the no decision. Trautmann came into the game in relief of Pickett going 1.2 innings, earning her second win of the season.

Escedy gave Adams State a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run to left center in the top of the second inning but Augustana was able to limit the damage as Pickett set down the next three batters in order.

Augustana scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning to gain its first lead of the night at 2-1. The Vikings got a walk and two straight hits to start out the inning setting up Kennedy's two-RBI single.

Adams State knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning with Ecsedy's second longball of the night, a shot to right center. The Grizzlies regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI double by Tayler Else that gave her team a 3-2 lead.

After leaving two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Vikings exploded for five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to earn its second straight win.

After a leadoff out, Augustana loaded the bases after a single, a hit by pitch and a walk. Trautmann then singled to drive in two runs and regain the lead for the Vikings at 4-3. Later in the inning, Peterson delivered an RBI single and forced a throw that allowed another run to score to put the Vikings in front 6-3.  Augustana scored its final run of the game when Erin Kempf grounded out to second with one out driving in a run.

Trautmann set down the Grizzlies in order in the top of the seventh inning, striking out the final batter of the game.

Game notes
  • Nichol and Alstott picked up their first multiple-hit games in an Augustana uniform.
  • Trautmann recorded her 33rd career multi-RBI game.
  • Trautmann earned her 47th career win in the circle for Augustana, bringing her one away from breaking into the top 10 in wins in school history.
