AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Jordan Schaffer's grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted No. 5 Augustana softball to a 6-1 win over Ferris State University on Saturday morning at the Rebel Spring Games. The Vikings scored all six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn their 10th win of the season improving to 10-2.
Schaffer finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate with her four RBI coming on the long ball to left field. It was her second home run of the season, both which went down as game-winners.
Mackenzie Alstott was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Emily Heniz's one-out bases loaded walk in the sixth tied the game at 1-1.
Carley Pickett picked up her second win of the season for Augustana tossing all seven innings and allowing just one run on five hits while striking out a season-high six batters.
After two scoreless innings, Ferris State jumped on the board with two outs in the first inning. Clean-up hitter Amy Dunleavy doubled down the left field line to drive in the game's first run and give her team a 1-0 lead.
Augustana threatened in the fourth and fifth innings after
Lindsay Spanton hit a one-out ground-rule double in the bottom of the fourth and Schaffer led off the fifth with a single. Spanton was stranded at second and the Vikings weren't able to get a runner past second in the fifth inning either.
Pickett surrendered a leadoff single in the sixth but set down the next three batters in order setting up yet another magical sixth inning for the Vikings. Today marked the fourth time Augustana has won a game with a big hit in the sixth inning.

Lindsay Spanton walked and
Erin Kempf was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Emily Heinz then got into a one-on-one battle with the Ferris State pitcher, seeing 10 pitches and fouling off six before earning a walk to drive in Augustana's first run tying the game at 1-1. Schaffer then stepped to the plate and belted a line drive grand slam home run on a 1-2 count to put the Vikings in front 5-1.
Maddie Merriam followed with a double down the right field line and eventually came in to score to make the score 6-1 on an RBI but single by Alstott on a squeeze play. Pickett mowed through three batters in the top of the seventh as the Vikings picked up their third straight win at the Rebel Spring Games.
