ST. JOSEPH, Mo. –
No. 12 Emporia State (24-6) scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back in a 7-1 win over No. 5 Augustana College softball on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Vikings who fall to 15-3 on the season after the loss.

Emporia State had nine hits and left 12 runners on base but was able to keep Augustana off the board. The Vikings finished with five hits, led by Mackenzie Alstott with two singles, and left seven runners on base.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Taylor Zordel led off the inning with double and came around to score on a fielder's choice after moving up to third on a passed ball. ESU then scored on a two-out RBI single by Andrea Piezuch but would do no further damage leaving the bases loaded.

The Vikings put a threat together in the bottom half of the first inning with back-to-back singles by Alstott and Sarah Kennedy but Jenelle Trautmann bounced into a double play to end the inning.

A leadoff walk by Lindsay Spanton in the bottom of the second inning allowed Augustana to cut ESU's lead in half at 2-1. Spanton walked to start the inning and two batters later Carly Peterson put runners on first and second after she walked. Spanton eventually came around to score when Jordan Schaffer reached on an error.

Emporia State went ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning and the Vikings put together threats in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings but would not get any closer being held hitless in the final two innings.

The Hornets went up 4-1 in the sixth and pushed across three more in the seventh to hand Augustana its first loss in exactly one month.

Augustana is currently underway in its second game of the day against Missouri Western State. Live stats for that game can be found HERE.
