WAYNE, Neb. – Jordan Schaffer's two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave No. 11 Augustana College softball a 2-0 win over Wayne State College in game one of a doubleheader. The Wildcats (15-9, 1-1 NSIC) got a walk-off single in game two to defeat the Vikings (18-5, 1-1 NSIC) 2-1 and gain the split in the twinbill.

Game one

Locked into a pitchers' duel through four innings, Erin Kempf led off the fifth inning with a double to right field before moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emily Heinz. Schaffer then stepped to the plate and blasted her team-leading fifth home run of the season.

Jenelle Trautmann earned her 12th win of the season to improve to 12-2 tossing 5.0 innings and striking out eight batters giving up four hits. Carley Pickett came in to pitch for the Vikings in the sixth inning and closed-out the game to earn her NSIC-leading fifth save of the season.

Hits were hard to come by for each team on a windy day in Wayne, Neb. The two teams combined for just nine hits on the day.

Augustana had the only multiple-hit inning by either team in the contest coming through with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth.

Game two

Much like the first game, the pitchers engaged in another showdown in the circle with both teams being held off the scoreboard through four innings. Wayne State finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kaiti Williams delivered an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings ended the threat and plated a run of their own in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Mackenzie Alstott led off the inning with a bunt single and moved up to third after a groundout and Trautmann reached on an error. With Lindsay Spanton at the plate, Alstott came around to score on a wild pitch but the Vikings would end up leaving two runners on base in the inning.

Wayne State threatened with another leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Vikings stranded another Wildcat runner on third to give themselves a chance in the seventh. After a leadoff walk by Schaffer, Maddie Merriam popped into a double play on a bunt attempt to erase the leadoff base runner.

Augustana wasn't able to push a run across in the seventh and Wayne State's Lexie Loos led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and eventually came around to score on Williams' RBI single after being sacrificed to second giving Wayne State the 2-1 win.

Pickett was tagged with the loss for the Vikings falling to 4-2 on the season while Wayne State's Sara Scheffert improved to 7-7 with the win.

Augustana opens the home portion of its 2014 schedule this weekend hosting MSU Moorhead on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Northern State on Sunday at 12 p.m.
