SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 11 Augustana College softball swept its home opening doubleheader with two NSIC wins over MSU Moorhead. The Vikings opened with an 8-0 win in five innings and picked up an 8-3 win in the nightcap. Augustana (20-5, 3-1 NSIC) hit four home runs on the day and had 25 combined hits on the day to down the Dragons (5-8, 1-3 NSIC).

Game one
Augustana had 10 hits in the opener, with seven players recording a hit, as Lindsay Spanton, Erin Kempf and Maddie Merriam each had two hits.

Jenelle Trautmann (13-2) picked up her 13th win in the circle for the Vikings going 4.0 innings and striking out nine batters while allowing just three hits.

The Vikings got off to a fast start scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Caitlin Nichol started the inning off with a walk after a nine-pitch at bat and moved into scoring position after an infield single by Mackenzie Alstott. Sarah Kennedy then bunted both runners into scoring position setting up the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Trautmann.

One batter later, Spanton put the Vikings up 2-0 taking an 0-2 pitch up the middle for an RBI single.

After a scoreless second inning, Augustana broke through for five runs in the bottom of the third on five hits. After a leadoff single by Kennedy, Trautmann blasted her third home run of the season over the scoreboard in center field to make it a 4-0 game. Spanton followed with a solo shot to right field to put the Vikings in front 5-0 and four batters later Maddie Merriam connected on her first career home run, a two-run shot, to make the score 7-0.

MSU Moorhead threatened in the top of the fourth inning getting back-to-back singles to start but Trautmann struck out the next three batters to end the threat. Augustana was held without a hit in the fourth inning but Spanton came around to score on a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the fifth to give the Vikings an 8-0 run-rule win.

Game two
It was much of the same for the Vikings in game two as they had scored eight runs on 15 hits in an 8-3 victory. Seven Vikings had two or more hits in the game, led by Erin Kempf who went 3 for 4. Spanton went 2 for 3 with a home run and drove in three runs in the nightcap and Emily Heinz was 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI.

Carley Pickett made her 11th start of the season and earned her fifth win to improve to 5-2 going five strong innings holding the Dragons to no runs on three hits. She struck out five for the Vikings and made room for Karlee Koopman to get her second appearance of the day in the final two innings.

Augustana got off to another fast start after a quick 1-2-3 inning to start in the top of the first. The Vikings scored two runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the first. Trautmann drove in a run on a groundout and Spanton later delivered an RBI single to put the Vikings in front 2-0 after one inning.

Pickett pitched around a leadoff single in the second and the Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning after Schaffer led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Nichol.

The Vikings threatened again in the third after a one-out double by Trautmann. With two outs in the inning, Kempf singled to left field but Trautmann was thrown out at the plate to end the inning leaving the score at 3-0 after the third inning.

Augustana added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Nichol to make it 4-0 and made it 6-0 in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Heinz. The Vikings looked to put the run-rule into effect but left the bases loaded in the fifth to keep it a six-run lead.

The Dragons got on the board in the sixth to make the score 6-1 but Spanton delivered her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to right field to put the Vikings up 8-1. MSU Moorhead pushed two runs across in the top of the seventh inning to make the final tally 8-3.

Augustana closes-out its four-game homestand tomorrow afternoon hosting Northern State at 1 p.m. at Bowden Field.
