ABERDEEN, S.D. – Trey Heid threw for a career-high 311 yards and four touchdowns to lead Augustana College to a 48-17 win over Northern State on Saturday night at Swisher Field. Senior running back
Dajon Newell rushed for 119 yards and a score while catching two touchdown passes to move the Vikings to 2-1 on the season.
Augustana has now won 10 straight games over Northern State, including five straight at Swisher Field. The Vikings are 28-6-1 all-time against the Wolves.
Augustana moved the ball all night long on the Wolves (1-2) finishing the game with 511 yards of total offense, including a season-high 355 through the air. The Vikings added 156 rushing yards, led by Newell's 119, which was his first 100-yard rushing game since Nov. 10, 2012 at Southwest Minnesota State. Newell also broke-off a career-long 79-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter and added 41 receiving yards on five catches.
Heid connected with six different receivers for the third straight game, led by
Matt Heller who finished had three catches for a career-high 91 yards and a touchdown.
Grant Gebhardt had a season-high seven catches and 85 yards and a touchdown. Heller and Gebhardt each have three touchdowns on the season for the Vikings.
Augustana held Northern State to 350 yards of total offense. The Wolves gained 231 rushing yards and threw for 119. The Viking defense caused two turnovers on the night and
Ben Skelly had his hands on both of them. Skelly picked-off a pass late in the first quarter and later forced a fumble, which the Vikings recovered, in the third quarter. Skelly also added a career-high 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks, finishing the game with nine tackles.
Lucas Wainman was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, hitting one from 36 and another from 35. Wainman is now 5-for-5 on the season. He also punted six times for 280 yards (46.7 yards per punt), booting one 53-yarder and landing one inside the 20-yard line. Wainman kicked-off nine times and recorded four touchbacks on the afternoon.
Wainman started and finished the scoring on the day for the Vikings, opening the scoring with a 36-yard field goal in Augustana's second possession of the game to give his team a 3-0 lead. He scored the final three points of the game with a 35-yard field goal with 12:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Augustana took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter before going off for 28 points to take a 31-7 halftime lead. On the first drive of the second quarter, Heid led the Vikings on a 13-play, 85-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Newell.
The Wolves responded quickly on the ensuing drive, highlighted by a 52-yard run by quarterback Jared Jacobson, scoring on five plays on an 11-yard run by Nicholas Truen to make the score 10-7.
The Vikings responded with 21 unanswered points to end the first half after a quick strike to respond to Northern State's quick touchdown. Heid hit Heller with a 48-yard touchdown pass just five plays later and the Vikings pushed their lead back to 10 at 17-7.
The Viking defense forced another three-and-out and the offense quickly went to work with three plays of 15-plus yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass from Heid to Gebhardt that gave Augustana a 24-7 lead.
Heid got the ball in his hands with 47 seconds remaining in the first half and led the Vikings on a five-play 45-yard drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown run by
CJ Ham that put Augustana in front 31-7 just before the end of the half. Ham finished the game with 20 yards rushing and a touchdown while catching four passes for 39 yards.
The Vikings got the ball to start the second half and were moving the ball until the drive stalled at midfield where the Vikings went for it on fourth down and two, turning the ball over the Wolves. Jacobson led NSU on a four-play 57-yard scoring drive, rushing for a four yard touchdown to make the score 31-14.
On the first play of Augustana's next drive, Newell ripped-off a career-long 79-yard touchdown run to put the Vikings in front 38-14. Newell's 79-yard rushing touchdown is the first of 50-plus yards since
Justin Greenway ran for a 60-yard touchdown against Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 15, 2012.
Northern State made it 38-17 on a 26-yard field goal by Nathan Shaw with 7:19 to play in the third quarter. The Vikings were forced to punt on their next possession but on the very first play of Northern State's drive, Skelly sacked Jacobson and stripped him of the football and one play later Heid hit Newell for an 11-yard score that gave Augustana a 45-17 lead.
Wainman tacked on another three points with his second field goal of the game with 12:49 to play and the Vikings would go on to down the Wolves 48-17.
Augustana returns to Kirkeby-Over Stadium next Saturday to host the University of Mary in the annual Viking Day's game at 1 p.m.
