Vikings drop season opener 3-1 to Crusaders

GOLDEN, Colo.
– The Augustana Volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 3-1 loss against Northwest Nazarene University in four sets in the Oredigger Classic.

Senior Courtney Ysker picked up her first double-double of the 2014 season with 17 kills and 17 digs in the first game of the season for the Vikings.

Ashley Wilson, making her collegiate debut, had double-digit kills with 11. The freshman had a team-best .391 attack percentage.

Tahlyr Banks started all four sets in her debut as a defensive specialist with a team-high 21 digs.

Taylor Roberts recorded a team-best 29 digs for Northwest Nazarene, while Kendra Bodine led the on the offense with 15 kills.

A slow start to the first set allowed NNU to get ahead 11-6, putting the Vikings in a hole that would we hard to get out of. Augustana didn't catch up, losing a close set 26-24. Ysker had a total of eight kills, while junior setter Marissa Johnson tallied 17 assists.

The Vikings retaliated in the second set with a 25-17 win, highlighted by an early 6-0 run to start the game. Bailey Koch had four kills during the big run, putting the team ahead early.

Another slow start in the third set found Augustana once again in a hole that couldn't get out of. Trailing 13-5 early in the set, the Vikings were forced to take a timeout and regroup. The Vikings couldn't muster another a comeback after the timeout, losing 25-20 to Northwest Nazarene, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Facing a late 21-17 deficit in the fourth set, the Vikings responded with a five-point run tying the set at 22 apiece. A couple of errors at the end of the set gave NNU the edge they needed to win the match.

Augustana finished with a .202 (62-25-183) attack percentage on offense, while Northwest Nazarene hit .213 (55-18-174).

The Vikings look to bounce back tonight with a match against Colorado Christian. Game time start is 8:30 p.m.
