Strong defensive play leads Augustana volleyball past Colorado Christian

GOLDEN, Colo. –
After losing the first set, Augustana College volleyball won three straight to defeat Colorado Christian University 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20) behind a season-high 17 kills from redshirt freshman Ashley Wilson. The Vikings evened their record to 1-1 on the season while Colorado Christian dropped to 1-1 as well. Augustana is competing in the Oredigger Classic hosted by Colorado School of Mines.
 
Courtney Ysker tallied her second straight double-double finishing with 15 kills and 17 digs while Sydney Hunsley added nine kills on 18 attempts for the Vikings. Augustana finished the match hitting just .132 as a team, but strong defensive play kept the Vikings in the mix. Augustana recorded 13 blocks in the match and had four players reach double-digits in digs.
 
Wilson and Bailey Koch kept the Colorado Christian attack at bay stuffing the middle with each recording six block assists on the night while fellow middle blocker Hunsley added five more for the Vikings.
 
Tahlyr Banks led Augustana defensively with 30 digs while Marissa Johnson posted a double-double with 14 digs and 46 set assists.
 
Colorado Christian jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the first set and never looked back going on to win the set 25-17. The Vikings gave up too many points in the set, finishing with 12 attack errors.
 
Augustana cleaned up its game in the second set and used a four-point and a five-point run in the middle of the set to gain a six-point lead at 16-10. The Vikings pushed the lead to seven at 20-13 after a kill by Hunsley before going on to win five of the next eight points and earn a 25-16 set two win.
 
The Vikings started off fast in the third set gaining a 4-1 lead but Colorado Christian would not be put away quickly as they fought back to win the next four straight points and take a 5-4 lead over the Vikings. The Cougars went on to build a five-point lead at 16-11 but Augustana fired right back to get within two at 18=16 on a kill by Ysker.
 
With CCU leading 21-18, Augustana called a timeout and came storming back, winning seven straight points to take the third set 25-21. Much of the same in the fourth set as the Cougars build a 12-8 lead but Augustana scored 12 of the last 15 points in the set to gain a 25-20 win and earn the match victory.
 
Augustana continues play in the Oredigger Classic tomorrow afternoon taking on No. 14 Grand Valley State at 3 p.m. before closing-out the tournament against host Colorado School of Mines at 7:30 p.m. CT.
