Vikings stun 14th-ranked Lakers 3-1 in Oredigger Classic

GOLDEN, Colo.
– The Augustana volleyball team got its first signature win against No. 14 Grand Valley State University. With the win, the Vikings improved to 2-1 on the year, while the Lakers dropped to 2-2.

Augustana posted 53 kills and 108 digs against GVSU in the first match of Saturday's Oredigger Classic on Lockridge Court. The Vikings took the match three sets to one (26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21) over Grand Valley State.

In an offensive and defensive battle which included a combined 110 kills and 227 digs, Augustana found itself edging the No.14 ranked team in the match Friday afternoon with a variety standouts in the four-set match.

Senior Courtney Ysker recorded her third-straight double-double with 18 kills and a career-best 24 digs. Ysker also picked up eight kills in the fourth set, which gave the Vikings the edge to secure the upset victory.

Sophomore Britany Cech recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 22 digs.

Freshman Ashley Wilson gave the Vikings the upper hand with back-to-back kills in the beginning of the fourth set. Wilson recorded eight kills for the match, while freshman Tahlyr Banks had 27 digs.

Augustana got off to a slow start in the first set, which allowed for both teams to be tied eight times before the Vikings finally gained the upper hand to take the first set 26-24.

An early 5-0 deficit to Grand Valley State was too much to overcome in the second set as Augustana lost 25-17 to the Lakers. Ysker continued her hot start with nine kills in the set, but that was not enough for the Vikings.   

Offensive was key for Augustana in the third set as six players lead the pack with a combined total of 15 kills. Junior Sydney Hunsley tallied five out of the 15 kills in the third set. The Papillion, Neb. native's eight kills were just one off her season high in 2014.

The Vikings put this this one to bed in the fourth set with a combination of Ysker and Wilson. The duo sparked a 5-0 run early in the set for Augustana. Both girls combined for 11 kills as Augustana completed the upset with a 25-21 victory to give the Vikings the overall win in the match.

Augustana wraps up the Oredigger Classic with 18th-ranked Colorado School of Mines at 7:30 p.m.
