Cold second half shooting dooms Vikings at SMSU

Augustana went over nine minutes without a field goal in the second half

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Augustana College women's basketball shot just 31 percent from the field and went over nine minutes without a field goal in the second half in a 77-71 loss to Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday at the R/A Facility. Southwest Minnesota State (1-11, 1-6 NSIC) snapped a 19-game losing streak and picked up its first win over Augustana (9-6, 3-5 NSIC) since Dec. 3, 2010.
 
Augustana made just 11 field goals in the second half and was just 3 of 11 from 3-point game. The Vikings finished the game shooting 34 percent (24 of 69) from the field, including 9 of 20 from 3-point range.
 
Shaunteva Ashley led all players with 29 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds. Logan O'Farrell added 13 points and six rebounds while Sophie Kenney pitched in with seven points.
 
SMSU had four players in double-figures, led by Annessa Rosch who scored 23 points. Amaun Frazier added 12 points for SMSU hitting two 3-pointers. The Mustangs finished the game shooting 50 percent (28 of 56) from the field, knocking down 10 of 14 from 3-point range.
 
Southwest Minnesota State led for the first 10 minutes of the first half as they were able to build a six-point lead at 16-10 just over seven minutes into the game.
 
The Vikings began to chip away at the lead going on an 11-3 run over the next 2:44 and eventually took a 19-18 lead after Koehn drilled the second of back-to-back 3-pointers.
 
Augustana extended its run to 27-12 to close-out the first half with a nine-point 37-28 lead. The Vikings led by 11 points but Amaun Frazier came up with a steal on an in-bound pass and made a layup with one second on the clock.
 
Ashley scored 13 points to lead all players in the first half going 4 of 7 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range. Logan O'Farrell added nine points and four rebounds in the half while Koehn hit two 3-pointers in the half on 3 of 4 shooting to finish with six points.
 
Augustana shot 38 percent (13-34) from the field in the first half, including 6 of 9 (66 percent) from 3-point range.
 
Southwest Minnesota State was hot from 3-point range early in the game and finished the first half hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range. SMSU shot 44 percent (12-27) from the field in the half and was led by Annessa Rosch and Emilee Duske who each scored six points in the half.
 
The Vikings pushed their lead back up to 11 earn in the second half but Southwest Minnesota State would not go away quietly as the Mustangs out-scored the Vikings 22-10 during a seven minute stretch to regain the lead at 53-52 with 10:37 remaining in the game.
 
Sydney Rome hit a 3-pointer on the Vikings' next possession to give the Vikings a two-point lead but SMSU answered with a bucket to tie the game at 55-55, where it would stay for the next three minutes as neither team was able to score.
 
SMSU then went on a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 63-55 lead with 3:30 remaining in the game. Augustana went over 10 minutes without scoring a point as the Mustangs took the lead before Ashley hit two free throws to make the score 63-57 with 3:07 to play.
 
The Vikings were able to get within three with 29 seconds to play but Southwest Minnesota State hit five free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 77-71 win, snapping a 19-game losing streak.
 
Augustana returns to action on Friday, Jan. 9, hosting Concordia-St. Paul at the Sioux Falls Arena at 6 p.m.
