SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - No.25 Augustana soccer had its 11 game unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1 defeat to No. 12 Minnesota State on Sunday at Morstad Field. The loss dropped the Vikings record to 11-2-1, 9-1-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the win improved the Mavericks record to 12-1-1, 10-0-1 in the NSIC.
Both teams played a back and forth game to start the first half,
Samantha Tymkowicz and
Meg Thacker both had chances early but Minnesota State's Lauren Hoeppner came up with saves to keep the game tied at zero.
Stephanie Stevens had a chance just before the end of the half to gain the lead when her shot just went over the crossbar and the half ended with the score 0-0.
The Mavericks had a couple of chances to take the lead early in the second half, however
Taylor Machacek came up with saves to keep the game scoreless.
In the 63rd minute, Augustana had a counter-attack which lead to a two on one situtaion for Tymkowicz and Stevens, Tymkowicz played a through-ball to Stevens in which she beats the goalie to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Stevens picked up her sixth goal of the season, while Tymkowicz recorded her second assist on the play.
Minnesota State would tie the game at one on a goal from Korey Kronforst in the 77th minute. Five Minutes later Morgan Cottew goal would give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead and the victory.
Augustana out-shot Minnesota State 13-12 in the game.
The Vikings will hit the road next weekend battling No. 21 Minot State Saturday at 11 a.m. and University of Mary Sunday at 1 p.m.
