SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The 20th ranked Vikings of Augustana (16-8, 9-7 NSIC) lost in straight sets to the second ranked Wolves of Northern State (22-2, 14-2 NSIC) Saturday night in Aberdeen, S.D. This was the Vikings second straight road lose.
Northern State jumped on the Vikings early in set-one, grabbing an early 5-1 lead. Augustana made little runs throughout the match but were unable to put a dent in the Wolves lead. Augustana trailed by as many as nine, but were unable to get the set within three points. Augustana dropped set-one, 25-16.
Set-two was much like the first one, as Northern State just seemed to hit everything in sight. Early in set-two the Wolves were hitting an astounding .431 from the field, using that to jump out to an 11-6 lead over Augustana. The Vikings tried to put something together midway through the set and got the match to within one of Northern State, but the Wolves had some luck on their side as a block by
Ashley Wilson on set-point floated all the way to the back line and out.
Augustana earned their first lead of the night in set-three when they won the first point of the set, their first time in their last six sets played that the won the first point. Augustana built upon their lead enjoying their largest lead of the night at six. Northern State came storming back though with a 10-1 run to take the lead. They never looked back. Augustana couldn't muster a late rally and fell in the set 25-19.
Augustana was led offensively by
Ashley Wilson and
Lauren Waite, who each notched double-digit kills for second consecutive night with 10 apiece.
Brittany Cech had six while
Becca Finley and
Dani Magdzas each added five of their own.
The Vikings once again found a rhythm with two setters Saturday.
Anna Sykora was the leading assists distributor though as she earned 20 while
Alex Banker had 16.
Marissa Johnson had two assists of her own.
Augustana won the block battle as they seven as a team compared to Northern's five. Wilson led the Vikings with five total blocks. Sydney Hunlsey and Waite each added two total blocks.
The dig totals were spread out evenly Saturday as Cech and Banks each tallied 10 while
Ivy Pearson had eight.Augustana will be a home next weekend for their final home series of the 2015 season. The Vikings will host Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. The match against the Mavericks is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, with the match against the Golden Bears scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
