Vikings open Puerto Rico trip with win behind Schilling's double-double

BAYAMÓN, Puerto Rico – No. 6 Augustana University men's basketball defeated Turabo 83-69 in a physical contest at the University of Puerto-Rico Bayamón on Friday evening. Augustana improves to 3-1 on the season with the win and will play American (Puerto Rico) on Saturday at 3 p.m. (CT).
 
Casey Schilling recorded his second double-double of the season finishing with 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with two assists, two blocks and two steals. Schilling has now recorded 15-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in the same game five times in his career. The double-double marks the 23rd of his career. Schilling's 18 rebounds ranks eighth all-time in a single game at Augustana.
 
Daniel Jansen led the Vikings in scoring with his second 20-point game of the season finishing with 21 on 6 of 9 shooting. Jansen was 8 of 12 from the free throw line and went over 1,600 career points in the win. Jansen has now scored 1,602 career points and holds strong at 10th all-time in Augustana history.
 
Matthew Brazendale had a big game off the bench for the Vikings scoring 12 points going 3 of 5 from 3-point range and the free throw line on the night. Alex Richter registered his fourth straight double-digit point performance of the season finishing with 12 on 4 of 13 shooting. Jordan Spencer finished with three points and seven assists for the Vikings, marking his fourth straight game with five or more assists.  
 
Augustana shot 39 percent (25 of 64) from the field while knocking down 10 of 27 (37 percent) from 3-point range. The Vikings have made 10 or more 3-pointers in four straight games to open the 2015-16 season.
 
Augustana shot a season-high 35 free throws in the game but finished just 25 of 35 (65.7 percent) from the line in the hot and humid conditions of the open-air gym. The Vikings matched the physical style of Turabo but limited the number of fouls in the game. Turabo was called for 26 fouls in the game to just 15 for the Vikings.
 
Turabo shot 38.7 percent (24 of 62) from the field, including 8 of 27 from 3-point range. Turabo was led by Emilio Collazo who finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
 
Augustana led by 10 at 44-34 with 3:30 remaining in the first half but Turabo scratched its way back to make it a two-point game at the half. The Vikings fouled Turabo on a 3-point attempt with 0.4 seconds remaining in the half and the Tainos hit two of the three free throws to make the score 48-46 at the half.
 
Turabo came out strong in the second half going on a 9-1 run to take just its second lead of the game at 55-49. The Vikings regained the lead when Brazendale converted a four-point-play converting the free throw after getting fouled while knocking down a triple.
 
Turabo regained the lead at 63-57 near the midway point of the first half but the Vikings responded with a 7-0 run to go in front by one at 64-63. Augustana made it an eight-point game at 71-63 with just over five minutes to play and held a 10-point lead with under a minute left in the game as the Vikings would go on to earn the 83-69 victory.
 
The Vikings will conclude their trip to Puerto Rico taking on American (Puerto Rico) at 3 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
