BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 2 Augustana had four players in double-figures led by
Casey Schilling's game-high 21 points as the Vikings won their seventh straight game with a 91-61 victory over Bemidji State on Friday night. Schilling added a game-high eight rebounds and was 8 of 13 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free throw line.
The Vikings improved to 7-1 on the season (4-0 NSIC) while Bemidji State drops to 4-4 (1-3 NSIC) with the loss. Augustana has now won three straight games over Bemidji State improving to 11-6 all-time against the Beavers.
Augustana has now scored 90-plus points in four straight games and five times this season.
Augustana saw 11 different players score on the night, including six players with eight or more points.
Daniel Jansen added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings finishing 4 of 9 from the field while knocking down 10 of 12 free throws. Jansen has scored 20 or more points in a game five times this season. Jansen moved into seventh all-time at Augustana in scoring passing Scott Beckstrand. Jansen has now scored 1,687 career points.
Jordan Spencer picked up 11 points and kept his streak of games with five-plus assists alive finishing with six. Spencer has dished out five or more assists in all eight games this season and 23 straight games dating back to Jan. 24 of last season.
Alex Richter added 10 points and six rebounds while
Tanner Odegaard and
Matthew Brazendale each pitched in with eight off the bench. The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field for the fourth straight game finishing 30 of 60 on the night. Augustana knocked down 10 of 19 3(52.9 percent) from behind the arc marking the seventh game this season connecting on double-digits from behind the arc.
Jordan Rhodes led BSU with 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including 3 of 5 from behind the arc. Bemidji State shot just 34.9 percent from the field, including 29.4 percent (10 of 34) from 3-point range.
After starting 0 for 3 from the field, the Vikings got hot from 3-point range taking an 11-2 just under three and a half minutes into the game knocking down 3 of 3 from behind the arc to gain the early lead on the road.
BSU ended a four minute scoring drought on a jumper by Elijah Valdez that made the score 11-4 but the Vikings scored six straight to take their first double-digit lead of the night at 17-4 after
Matthew Brazendale dropped in a pair of free throws.
Bemidji State cut Augustana's lead to nine twice over the next two minutes but the Vikings got the the free throw line often near the midway point of the first half and scored six straight points from the line before a Schilling layup gave Augustana a 28-11 lead with 7:52 remaining in the half.
Bemidji State turned the 3-point shot and pulled within 12 (33-21) on a triple from Calvin Harrington with four minutes left in the half but the Vikings went on an 11-6 run over the final 3:38 to take a 44-27 lead into the locker room.
Jansen and Schilling each scored 12 points in the first half for the Vikings to lead all players in scoring. Schilling was 5 of 8 from the field and Jansen knocked down 2 of 3 3-pointers and was 6 of 8 from the free throw line.
Augustana shot 43.3 percent (13 of 30) from the field in the half but was 6 of 10 from 3-point range and 12 of 15 from the free throw line. BSU was 10 of 29 (34.5 percent) from the field and 6 of 20 from 3-point range.
Augustana quickly built on its 17-point halftime lead extending it to 24 less than one minute into the second half with a 7-0 run that put Augustana in front 51-27.
Bemidji State played stingy over the next five minutes and the Vikings were just one of their next five from the field as the Beavers went on a 16-6 run to cut Augustana's lead to 14 at 57-43 with 11:59 to play.
Spencer took charge of the offense to stop BSU's run scoring six of the Vikings' next eight points and at the 7:51 mark of the second half, an Odegaard 3-pointer put Augustana back up by 20 at 70-50.
BSU got it down to 18 on a basket by Irvin Womack with 7:18 to play but the Vikings put the petal down with an 11-0 run to extend their lead to 81-52 and the Vikings would lead by as much as 30 before coming away with the 91-61 victory.
Augustana returns to action tomorrow night taking on Minnesota Crookston at 6 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium on the University of Minnesota Crookston campus.
