Strong first half leads No. 2 Augustana past Wayne State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 2 Augustana University scored 62 points in the first half and had 13 different players score in the game on its way to a 107-62 win over Wayne State (2-8, 1-5 NSIC) on Saturday night. The Vikings (9-1, 6-0 NSIC) won their ninth straight game and head into the holiday break having won four straight games by 30-plus points.
 
Casey Schilling registered his fifth double-double of the season (25th career) leading the Vikings with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Schilling also moved into 11th all-time in scoring at Augustana. He has scored 1,528 career points.
 
Daniel Jansen added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings while Alex Richter and Adam Beyer each reached double-digits. Richter finished with 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range while Beyer pitched in with 11 points, going 2 of 2 from the field and 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
 
Augustana shot 34 free throws on the night, connecting on 28 of 34 (82.4 percent) from the line. Wayne State shot just six free throws. The Vikings finished the game shooting 54.7 percent (35 of 64) from the field, including 9 of 22 from 3-point range.
 
Jordan Spencer matched his career-high with 11 assists as the Vikings dished out 26 as a team. Augustana had six players with two assists in the game. Tanner Odegaard finished the night with 9 points hitting 3 of 3 from behind the arc. Ben Weisbeck scored seven points while Marcus Asmus and Zach Huisken each added six.
 
The Vikings dominated the boards through the first four minutes of the game and were able to build an early 18-9 lead. The Vikings out-rebounded the Wildcats 9-1 through the first four minutes of the game, including grabbing six offensive boards.
 
Augustana extended its lead to double-digits right out of the first media timeout when Matthew Brazendale knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing off a dish from John Warren.
 
Jansen followed with a 3-pointer on the next possession and Schilling followed his own miss on the next possession for another putback basket to give Augustana a 15-point lead at 26-11 with 12:27 to play in the half.
 
The Vikings were just 3 of 10 from the field to start the game before finishing out the half shooting 17 of 26. Augustana knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half and out-scored Wayne State 32-15 over the final 9:56 of the first half to build a 29-point halftime lead.
 
Augustana led 62-33 at the break behind a 20-point performance by Schilling. Schilling also grabbed seven rebounds, including six offensive boards, to help the Vikings out-rebound the Wildcats 23-9 through 20 minutes.
 
Jansed added 13 points and six rebounds in the first half while Spencer dished out eight assists and grabbed four rebounds. Tanner Odegaard found his zone early in the game, hitting 3 of 3 3-pointers off the bench.
 
Augustana shot 55.6 percent (20 of 36) in the first half, including hitting 5 of 13 3-pointers. The Wildcats shot 50 percent (14 of 28) from the field, hitting 4 of 9 3-pointers. Augustana also connected on 17 of 21 free throws in the half but were called for just seven fouls as the Wildcats made just one of three free throws.
 
The Vikings opened the game wide open early in the second half going on a 20-7 run over the first 4:40 of the second half to build a 42-point lead at 82-40. Augustana emptied its bench with nine minutes left in the game, with all 14 players getting into the contest.
 
Augustana has now scored 90-plus points in six straight games and went over 100 points for the second time this season.
 
Augustana returns action Jan. 2-3 hosting USF and Southwest Minnesota State. Augustana and USF will tip-off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 at the Sioux Falls Arena before taking on SMSU at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
