Hot 3-point shooting leads Augustana past Midland in non-conference finale

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Lynsey Prosser and Sydney Rome combined for 43 points and 11 3-pointers to lead Augustana University women's basketball (10-2) to an 89-57 win over Midland University (7-7) in the final non-conference game of the season for the Vikings on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Prosser finished with a season-high 23 points knocking down 5 of 9 3-pointers while Rome matched her career-high with 20 points hitting 6 of 13 shots from behind the arc. Augustana finished the game 16 of 41 from 3-point range while shooting 44.3 percent from the field as a team.
 
Sophie Kenney added 12 points, six assists and four rebounds and Logan O'Farrell pitched in with 1 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists.
 
Augustana distributed the ball well on the night finishing with a season-high 26 assists. Four different players had four or more assists on the evening led by Kenney and Prosser who each finished with six each. Rome handed out four assists while grabbing three rebounds.
 
The Vikings also matched their season-high in steals with 21, leading to 30 points of Midland turnovers. Prosser's final line was 23 points, six assists and six steals on 9 of 15 shooting, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
 
Augustana opened up the game right away out-scoring the Warriors 20-8 in the first seven minutes of the contest. The Vikings put the pressure on Midland early, forcing the Warriors into 10 turnovers in the first quarter as the Vikings led 23-14 after the first 10 minutes of the contest.
 
Rome caught fire in the second quarter hitting three of her six 3-pointers in the second helping the Vikings to shoot a red-hot 58 percent from the field.
 
Midland cut Augustana's lead to eight at 30-22 with a quick 8-2 run early in the second quarter but the Vikings responded by out-scoring the Warriors 13-2 over the next three minutes to quickly build their lead up to 19 at 43-24 with 2:12 remaining in the half.
 
Midland got to the free throw line early and often in the third quarter. The Warriors scored five points from the stripe in the first 3:22 of the third quarter to get within 18 at 53-35. The Vikings kept the pressure on and scored eight points in transition during a nearly eight-minute stretch building a 27-point lead at 81-54 with 3:34 remaining in the game.
 
The Vikings went on to close-out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a convincing 89-57 win over Midland.
 
Augustana returns to NSIC action this weekend hosting a pair of contests at the Sioux Falls Arena. The Vikings will square-off with USF at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2 before hosting Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
