No. 2 Augustana men's basketball sets single season wins record in victory over USF

All five starters scored in double-digits for the second straight night to lead the Vikings past the Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
No. 2 Augustana College men's basketball set a single season record with its 25th victory of the season in a 78-61 win over the University of Sioux Falls in front of 3,687 fans at the Sioux Falls Arena on Saturday. All five starters scored in double-digits for the second straight night as the Vikings improved to 25-1, 19-1 NSIC. USF falls to 8-18, 5-15 NSIC behind 19 points from Mack Johnson.
 
Casey Schilling led the group of five in double-figures with 18 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Daniel Jansen pitched in with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals while hitting 10 of 12 free throws.
 
Augustana finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field, marking the first time being held under 50 percent from the field since Jan. 17 at Minnesota Duluth. The Vikings were hot from behind the arc, shooting 55 percent from 3-point range hitting 11 of 20 from behind the arc.
 
How it happened
• Neither team was able to pull away through the midway point of the first half as the two teams played to a 19-19 tie with 9:21 remaining in the half.
• The Vikings were able to grab two four-point leads but USF had the answer early, never letting the Vikings build on the lead.
• Augustana tied the game at 19 in the middle of a 9-3 run that allowed them to take a five-point lead after a 3-pointer by Adam Beyer put the Vikings in front 24-19 with 6:09 remaining in the half.
• USF answered with a quick 5-0 run to tie the game for the fifth time in the half but Augustana ended the half on a 13-2 run to go into the locker room with a 37-26 lead.
• The Vikings shot 46 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range knocking down 7 of 15 shots from behind the arc in the half.
• Augustana was 6 of 6 from the free throw line and allowed USF just one free throw in the first 20 minutes.
• The Vikings came out strong in the second half out-scoring USF 17-7 through the first eight minutes to build its largest lead of the night at 21 (54-33).
• The two teams traded baskets over the next five minutes and USF was able to cut the lead to 14 at 66-52 with 5:34 remaining in the game.
• The Cougars were able to cut the lead to 13 but the Vikings would pull away for their 25th win of the season.
