LAS VEGAS – Jenelle Trautmann continued her torrid offensive pace hitting two home runs and driving in five runs to lead No. 14 Augustana College softball to a 12-5 win over Western Oregon on Saturday. Gretta Melsted won her 300th game as the Vikings' head coach. Melsted has compiled a career record of 300-149 in nine seasons at Augustana.
Karlee Koopman earned the complete-game victory for the Vikings, striking out three batters for her first victory of the season.
The Viking offense exploded for a season-high 12 hits and 12 runs and had three players with multiple hits.
Caitlin Nichol was 4 for 4 with four singles and scored four runs.
Sarah Kennedy finished 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Trautmann was 2 for 5 with two home runs, including a three-run shot in the top of the third inning. She gave the Vikings an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, scoring Nichol who led off the inning with a single.
Trautmann extended Augustana's lead to 5-0 with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. Koopman held the Wolves to just one hit through the first three innings and the Vikings added to their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits to take an 8-0 lead. All three runs were scored with two outs in the inning.
Western Oregon got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two runs on three hits to make the score 8-2 after four innings.
The Wolves added a run on an RBI double by Brandy Knowles in the fifth to make it a five run game at 8-3 but the Vikings responded with a four-spot in the top of the sixth to push the lead to nine.
Jordan Schaffer delivered the big blow with a three run home run to center field to put Augustana in front 12-3 after Kennedy delivered an RBI single that scored Nichol who picked up her fourth single of the game earlier in the inning.
Western Oregon plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth scoring two unearned runs to make the score 12-5, where it would stay.
The Vikings are set for their final game of the Desert Stinger on Saturday night when they take on No. 19 Humboldt State.
