SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – A late 20-8 run in the second half proved to be too much to handle for the Augustana women's basketball team on Saturday, losing 86-77 to MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
The Vikings' record slipped to 16-9 (10-8 NSIC) on the year, while the Dragons improved to 12-10 (11-7 NSIC).
The loss snapped a season-long five-game winning streak for Augustana, and was only the third time this year it had lost on its home floor.
Shaunteva Ashley led the Vikings with a game-high 29 points. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native also added six rebounds and had three assists in 34 minutes of action.
Allie Koehn, coming off the bench, added 16 points, which included four made 3-pointers on the day.
Logan O'Farrell chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.
MSUM was led by Megan Roehrich's team-high 27 points. Roehrich also pulled down five rebounds.
Drew Sannes picked up her second double-double this year with a 17-point, 13-rebound day, both new season highs.
MSU Moorhead's plus-23 advantage on the glass turned out to be key as it resulted in 21 second-chance points for the Dragons.
Both teams battled to a 10-10 tie going into the under-15 media timeout. An Ashely 3-pointer gave the senior her 1669th point of her career, moving into fifth all-time on the women's career scoring list.
The outside-shooting duo of
Sydney Rome and Koehn struck again with back-to-back 3s that gave the Vikings the lead at 16-15 with 10:32 remaining in the first half and forced the Dragons to take a timeout.
Another 3 by Koehn at the 7:24 mark pushed Augustana's lead to seven and gave the Vikings their sixth made 3-pointer in the opening half.
MSUM made it a three-point game going into halftime with an 11-7 run over the final seven minutes of the half.
Augustana was able to survive a cold-shooting first half (28.9 percent) by knocking down six 3s. They made a total of 11 baskets in the first 20 minutes.
MSU Moorhead kept themselves in the contest with some strong play on the boards, outrebounding the Vikings 26-19 in the half.
The second half got underway with the Dragons taking their first lead in the game since midway through the first half after a turnaround jumper in the paint by Savanna Handevidt put them up 34-33 with 16:08 on the clock.
Another big 3-pointer by Koehn, her third of on the afternoon, put Augustana back on top 38-36 just minutes later, and gave the redshirt freshman her ninth point in the contest.
Koehn's 3 sparked a 14-7 run for the Vikings, upping their lead to six at 49-43 with 9:21 left.
MSUM countered with a game-changing 20-8 run that was capped off by a long 3 from by Banasik to take a four-point lead. It was the guard's sixth point of the game.
MSU Moorhead never looked back the rest of the way, keeping at least a five-point lead for the final five minutes of the half, giving them the nine-point victory.
Sometimes the shots just don't go downAugustana suffered through one its worst shooting nights this season on Saturday. If not for a couple of buckets late, it would have set a new season low for shooting percentage in a game this year.
