Vikings' streak reaches five with sweep of Golden Bears

The Augustana baseball team extended its winning streak to five with a two-game sweep of Concordia-St. Paul (6-0, 8-3) on Saturday night at the Kino Sports Complex. With the two victories, the Vikings improved to 5-6 on the year, while the Golden Bears dropped to

Augustana still remains unbeaten (5-0) on their current nine-game spring trip.

Game One

The Vikings used some dominating pitching to pick up a 6-0 shutout victory in game one.

Augustana was able to take advantage at the plate early, scoring six runs on just seven hits in the contest.

Colton Fast (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, going six scoreless innings and giving up just four hits, while also striking out a season-high five.

Josh Benson had a season-high hits at the plate in win go along with one RBI.

Alex Beals smacked his first collegiate home run, a three-run bomb in the top of the first.

The Vikings got on the board right out the gate with four runs in the top half of the first inning on three hits. Beals three-run home run highlighted the high-scoring inning, his first of the year.

Augustana tacked on another run to make it a 5-0 game in the top of the second with a sac fly by Wilber that scored Justin Warne from third base.

A RBI single through the right side with one out by Benson gave the Vikings their final run of the game. Benson's RBI allowed for Zach Dibble, who doubled the previous at bat.

Fast's strong pitching and solid relief work by Zach Reeg in the bottom of the seventh took care of CU the rest of the way, holding them to just five hits on the day.

Game Two

Augustana used a surge of runs in the middle innings to erase a three-run deficit en route to an 8-3 victory, pushing its winning streak to a season-best five games.

Patrick Fiala spearheaded a potent attack at the plate by the Vikings' bats, going 2 for 4 with four RBI and a home run.

Jacob James went a perfect 3 for 3 with two runs scored, both new season highs.

Lincoln Voss (1-0) got the win on the hill, coming in a relief role. Voss, replacing starter Kalib Mauch, came in during the bottom of the third inning and went the remaining 4.2 innings. The right-handed sophomore allowed just four hits on the day and no runs and racked up five strike outs.

Concordia-St. Paul got its big lead of the game in the top half of the third with a RBI groundout by Kevin Woebke with two outs to make it 3-0.

The Vikings countered with an explosive five-run inning to take the lead and never look back. The big inning at the plate was highlighted by a three-run homer by Fiala, his second of the year.

Augustana added one more run in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single by Fiala, his fourth RBI in the game, to center field to make it 8-3.

Voss held the Golden Bears at bay the rest of the way, securing the victory.

The Vikings are back in action on Monday for nine-inning game against Lubbock Christian.
