Jansen's overtime game-winner sends No. 1 seed Vikings into NSIC Tournament Title game

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –
Daniel Jansen hit a layup with 2.4 seconds left in overtime to lift No. 1 seed Augustana men's basketball (29-2) to a 67-65 victory over North Division No. 4 seed Northern State (21-8) on Monday night at the Sanford Pentagon. Northern State tied the game at 65 after Tydan Storrusten converted a 3-point-play with 22 seconds left.
 
Augustana held for the last shot and Jordan Spencer found Jansen at the right block and he dropped one in to put the Vikings ahead by two. The Wolves got off a heave before the buzzer but the ball bounced off the rim and the Vikings advance to the NSIC Tournament Championship game for the first time.
 
Augustana and Northern State played to eight tie scores and six lead changes, with the final tally being decided with just two seconds left on the clock. Jansen finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds while matching his career-high for the second straight night with three blocks. His third and biggest block of the night happened with 2:31 left in overtime and the Vikings leading by three.
 
How it happened
• Augustana opened up a 10-6 lead through the first five minutes of the game, taking the four point lead when Alex Richter converted a 3-point-play after getting fouled on a strong take off a Spencer bounce pass.
• The Vikings went 0 for its next 7 from the field and Northern State used a 12-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 18-12 just past the midway point of the first half.
• Northern State extended its run to 16-2 to build a 22-12 lead with 7:55 remaining in the first half.
• Zach Huisken battled hard for a basket off a Casey Schilling pass and the Vikings went on a 9-0 run to cut Northern's lead to 22-21.
• The Vikings got within three on a 3-pointer by Alex Richter in transition and Casey Schilling hit two free throws on a 1-and-1 attempt to cut the lead to one.
• Skye Warwick heated up for the Wolves scoring six points in a 10-3 NSU run that put his team back in front by eight at 32-24 with 3:28 remaining in the half.
• The Vikings closed-out the first half strong out-scoring the Wolves 9-3 over the final three minutes to get within two at the break.
• Northern State held a 35-33 advantage at halftime after shooting 48 percent from the field and out-rebounding Augustana 19-12.
• Augustana finished the first half shooting 46 percent from the field, that included an 0 for 7 stretch.
• The Vikings hit 3 of 8 from 3-point range, getting a big one from Schilling with a minute left in the half that got the Vikings within two. Schilling finished 4 of 7 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free throw line.
• Augustana tied things up for the third time on the night on a fastbreak bucket by Alex Richter but the Wolves went on an 11-3 run over the next four minutes to push their lead to eight at 48-40 with 13:40 remaining in the game.
• The Vikings started to chip away at the lead from the free throw line as the Wolves continued to foul and the Vikings cut the lead to three at 48-45 on a basket by Jansen.
• Spencer Pankonin put Northern State back up by six with a 3-pionter but the Vikings went on an 8-0 run ending with a no-look pass by Spencer to Jansen for the easy basket giving Augustana its first lead since 12:40 of the first half at 53-51 with 6:02 to play.
• Northern State hit two 3-pointers in a one minute stretch (7-0 run) to go back in front 58-53 with 3:07 to play.
• Jansen hit a huge 3-pointer with 2:44 remaining to cut it to two and Jordan Spencer tied the game for the seventh time hitting two free throws to knot the game at 58 with 1:22 to play.
• Spencer had a chance to win it with a layup attempt with 23 seconds left but it bounced off the rim and out.
• Northern State had a 3-point attempt fall short before the buzzer and the two teams would head into overtime tied at 58.
• Augustana and Northern State combined for just 16 points in the extra frame, and twice played to a tie score.
• The Vikings took a 63-60 lead when Jansen converted a 3-point-play with 3:18 left but the Wolves would fight back to tie the game at 65 converting a 3-point-play of their own with 22 seconds left.
• Augustana held for the last shot and Spencer found Jansen for the basket and the Vikings would hang on for the 67-65 victory.
