ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Senior pitcher
Jenelle Trautmann struck out a season-high 10 batters and hit her 10th home run of the season to lead No. 24 Augustana softball to a 2-0 victory over Pittsburg State University on Friday morning. The Vikings improved to 15-4 with the win, Pittsburg State fell to 13-6.
Trautmann allowed just four hits in 5.2 innings of work while earning her eighth victory of the season to improve to 8-1.
Carley Pickett pitched the final inning and a third, recording her third save of the season giving her 16 in her career. Pickett is just three saves shy of setting the school record.
Trautmann helped her own cause leading off the bottom of the second with a home run to give Augustana a 1-0 lead.
The Vikings scored their only other run in the game in the bottom of the third when Sarah Kenendy drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Pickett led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a throwing error as
Caitlin Nichol reached on a fielder's choice on a ground ball to first.
Mackenzie Alstott then moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Kennedy fouled out to left field to drive in Pickett and give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
Pittsburg State put together a threat in the top of the sixth inning putting runners on second and third with one out. Trautmann struck out her 10th batter of the game and Pickett entered the game and got a Pittsburg State batter to strike out swinging to end the threat and the inning.
The Gorillas got a one out single in the top of the seventh but Pickett struck out two batters in the inning, including the final out to give Augustana its first victory at the Missouri Western tournament.
Augustana returns to action at 4 p.m. taking on Central Missouri.
