Jenelle Trautmann and
Karlee Koopman combined to hold Washburn to just two hits in a 12-2 win for the Vikings over the Ichabods. The Vikings (18-5) used a seven-run top of the fourth inning to pull away late and defeat Washburn (16-10) by run-rule in five innings.
Kylie Rome came up with the big blast for the Vikings in the top of the fifth inning, hitting a grand slam to put Augustana in front 12-0. The home run is the second of the season for Rome, and the four RBI is a season-high.
Jenelle Trautmann earned the win in the circle going three innings and allowing no hits while striking out four to improve to 11-1.
Karlee Koopman pitched the final two innings striking out two and allowing two unearned runs on two hits.
Caitlin Nichol went 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Sarah Kennedy finished 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI. Trautmann finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Trautmann has now hit a team-leading 12 home runs on the season, bringing her career total to 67. She is now just eight home runs shy of moving into second all-time in NCAA Division II history and 12 away from the all-time record.
Trautmann helped her cause in the top of the first inning, hitting a three-run home run to give Augustana an early 3-0 lead. Nichol led off the inning with a bunt single and
Carley Pickett followed with a walk to put two runners on with nobody out. After Kennedy popped out, Trautmann drilled her 12th home run of the season.
Trautmann struck out two in the bottom of the first and the Vikings added two more runs in the top of the second to jump in front 5-0. With two outs in the inning, Nichol and Pickett delivered back-to-back singles, with Nichol coming around to score on Pickett's RBI hit. Pickett moved up to second on the throw to the plate and Kennedy drove her in with an RBI double to give Augustana a five-run lead.
Trautmann held the Ichabods hitless over the next two innings and the Vikings tacked on seven more runs in the top of the fourth to build a 12-0 lead.
Erin Kempf started the inning with a bunt single and a stolen base before coming around to score on an RBI single by Nichol to make the score 6-0.
Kennedy then drove in Nichol with a single to make it 7-0 and Trautmann singled to load the bases.
Jordan Schaffer delivered a sacrifice fly to give Augustana an 8-0 lead and after a walk by Koopman, Rome blasted a grand slam to left center to put her team in front 12-0.
Washburn was able to push across two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 12-2 but Koopman was able to work out of the jam. Augustana went down in order for the only time in the game in the top of the fifth and Washbrun loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but Koopman worked out of the jam to secure the five-inning win for the Vikings.
Augustana will play its sixth and final game at the Missouri Western Tournament against Missouri Southern State at 3 p.m.
