GAME ONE | GAME TWO
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team got a spilt with third-ranked St. Cloud State on Sunday, winning game two of the doubleheader at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field, bringing an end to the Huskies' hopes of an unbeaten season. The Vikings' record went to 13-10 (4-4 NSIC), while SCSU fell to 23-1 (7-1 NSIC) on the year.
Augustana was able to find its swing at the plate in the second game, going off for 13 runs in the contest, the most that St. Cloud State has allowed in a game this year.
Game OneThe Vikings were shut out in the first game of the afternoon, losing 7-0.
Augustana's three hits in the contest were a new season low.
The Huskies' Logan Spitzack (4-0) went all seven innings on the mound, picking up the complete-game shutout victory.
Michael Letkewicz (0-3) was credited with the loss for the Vikings. The right-hander lasted only 1.2 innings before being relieved, giving up three earned runs and walking five batters.
Bryce Berg,
Marcus O'Neill, and
Jack Goihl were the three Augustana players to record a hit in the loss.
SCSU got things started with two-run inning in the top of the first to take control early. Karl Sorensen brought in the two runs with a single to center field that scored the runners on second and third base.
A three-run inning in the top half of the third pushed St. Cloud State's lead to six. The big inning was capped off by an RBI single to left field by Brandon Arnold that drove in Eric Loxtercamp.
Arnold struck again in the top of the fifth inning with another RBI single, this time bringing in Beau Fandel, making it 7-0.
The Vikings never seriously challenged the rest of the way, getting just two hits in the final three innings at the plate.
Game TwoAfter being shut out in game one, Augustana's bats came alive in the second game of the twin bill, pouring in 13 runs to hand the talented Huskies their first loss of 2015, 13-5.
The Vikings made their mark early in the win, scoring all 13 runs in the first two innings.
Augustana collected 14 hits in the game.
Patrick O'Donnell made the most of his second start of the season, going 3 for 5, a new career high. O'Donnell also hit his first home run of his collegiate career in the win and also finished just a triple away from hitting for the cycle.
Goihl racked up three hits in the win to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.
Troy Pilkington and
Patrick Fiala each hit home runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Ryne Lees (4-0) kept his perfect record intact. The sophomore from Rapid City went six innings on the bump, giving up four earned runs. Lees also had three strikeouts in the game.
The Vikings put this one away fast, racing out to a 5-0 lead after one inning. The five runs came on five hits and were highlighted by home runs by Fiala and Pilkington.
An eight-run second inning blew this game wide open. Augustana was able to get its eight runs on six hits. Six Vikings recorded a RBI in the explosive inning with
Jacob James' two-RBI single to left field highlighting the inning.
SCSU got on the scoreboard with a two-run shot from Arnold in the top of the third, cutting the Vikings' lead to eleven.
St. Cloud State added three more runs the rest of the way, but never got the momentum is was looking for to try and work its way back into the game, resulting in the loss which snapped the 23-game winning streak.
Augustana is back in action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at the University of Mary. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
