MINOT, N.D. – The Augustana baseball team used some serious power at the plate to rack up two wins on Sunday at Minot State, giving it the four-game sweep in the series. The Vikings improved to 19-12 (10-6 NSIC) on the year, while the Beavers fell to 8-19 (5-10 NSIC).
Game OneAugustana got some clutch hits late to rally for a 6-5 win.
Jack Goihl hit his 10th home run of the year in the win, part of a 2-for-4 game at the plate. The senior also had two RBI and scored one run.
Alex Beals and
Bryce Berg each smacked their third homers of the season, both coming late in the top of the sixth inning to put the Vikings up for good.
Colton Vien (2-1) was credited the win, coming in a relief appearance. Vien went four innings on the afternoon, giving up just one run on two hits. The former Montevideo grad racked up a season-high seven strikeouts on the bump.
Ryan Hamilton, making a rare bullpen appearance, notched the first save of his career, coming in the seventh and securing the win for Augustana.
The Vikings struggled to get the bats going early, being held to two hits through the first two innings of play while also striking out five times.
Goihl got the first runs of the game, smacking a two-run homer to left center in the top of the third inning with two outs. The Robbinsdale native took advantage of a 2-2 pitch, sending it out of the confines of Corbett Field.
Minot State was able to take advantage of some control issues by
Michael Letkewicz in the bottom half, scoring four runs to take 4-2 lead through three innings of play, effectively ending the right-hander's day on the hill. Vien came in for relief and was able to get Augustana of the jam and limit the damage.
The Vikings cut the Beaver's lead to one after a leadoff home run by
Lucas Barry started things off in the top of the fifth inning. It was the second long ball of the season for the freshman.
A Jordan Schulz RBI single pushed the Minot State lead back to two at 5-3 in the bottom half of the fifth.
Augustana came up clutch in the late innings, taking a 6-5 lead that it would never relinquish in the top of the sixth after two home runs by Berg and Beals. Berg started by tying the game with his two-run jack. Beals followed one batter later with a solo blast to put the Vikings up for good.
The Vikings' pitching staff took control the rest of the way, with Vien retiring the side in order in the bottom of the sixth before giving way to Hamilton, who came in and closed out the contest, highlighted by striking out the final two Beaver hitters at the plate.
Game TwoAugustana got a quality game from its pitching staff in a 15-4 game-two win.
Patrick O'Donnell picked up three hits in the win to go along with two RBI. The right-fielder also scored three runs in the game, one of four Viking players to do so.
Justin Warne had his best game of the year at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3. The junior also had two RBI in the contest.
Tyler Field (2-1) turned in a quality start on the hill. Field went five innings, giving up one run on one hit, a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth.
Alex Fink busted open the scoreless game in the top of the second with a solo homer to left field to put the Vikings on the board. Augustana added one more run in the inning after an RBI single by Warne scored O'Donnell.
The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the top of the third after a two-run bomb from Berg made it 4-0.
A seven-run inning at the plate of the top half of the fourth put this out of Minot State's reach. The explosive inning was capped off by
Zach Dibble's two-out, two-RBI single to left field that made it 11-0. Augustana got its seven runs on seven hits in the inning, with six of the hits being the extra-base variety.
Field's no-hit bid was ended in the bottom of the 4th after a solo home run from Paul Vogelsang got the Beavers on the scoreboard.
The sophomore left-hander rebounded nicely in the bottom of the fifth, getting a 1-2-3 inning to close out his day and give him the decision.
Jacob Blank came in for relief in the bottom half of the sixth inning and immediately picked up where Field left off, retiring the Minot State lineup in order, keeping the Vikings up 11-1.
The Beavers kept themselves afloat by scoring a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 11-2. The run came on a wild pitch by senior
Troy Pilkington which allowed the Minot State runner to score from third base.
Augustana added four more runs in the top of the eighth inning to push their lead 13. The Vikings scored the four runs on two hits.
The Beavers got two garbage runs late in the bottom half of the eighth, but couldn't muster up any more to keep the game going, losing in eight and giving Augustana the four-game sweep.
The Vikings return to the diamond for a doubleheader with Winona State on Wednesday at Karras Park Home of Ronken Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
