Hot bats guide Vikings to sweep of Golden Eagles

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana baseball got back to its winning ways on Wednesday, picking up two wins against Minnesota Crookston at Karras Park Home Ronken Field. With the victories, the Vikings improved to 24-15 (15-9 NSIC), while the Golden Eagles dropped to 11-23 (5-23 NSIC) on the season.

The back-to-back double-digit wins were the first time Augustana has scored 10-plus runs in consecutive games in a month.

Game One

The Vikings used a six-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to pull away in a 10-5 victory.

Augustana got their 10 runs on 14 hits, snapping a two-game losing streak when recording at least 10 hits in a ballgame.

Patrick O'Donnell led the way going 2-for-4 with four RBI in the contest, all coming off a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Seven Vikings picked up two hits in the win.

Zach Reeg (1-0) notched his first collegiate victory, coming in a relief appearance. Reeg went 0.1 innings with one strikeout in the top half of the fifth.

Augustana took a 2-1 lead after the first inning after Patrick Fiala's sacrifice fly scored Jack Goihl from third base.

UMC countered with a two-running of their own to start the second, capped off by a Patrick Higgins' double to right center that made it 3-2.

The Vikings pulled away with a six-run inning in the bottom half of the fifth. Augustana struck early with three straight singles by Goihl, Bryce Berg, and Fiala to start off, forcing Minnesota Crookston to make a pitching change with the bases loaded and no outs. Alex Fink immediately took advantage with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. O'Donnell then delivered the play of the game, crushing the grand slam, making it 8-4 Augustana.

Jacob James added one more run in the inning after driving in Lucas Barry from third base on a ground ball.

A balk by the Golden Eagles brought in Reeg to push the Vikings' lead to six in the bottom of the sixth.

Augustana closed strong from there to take game one.

Game Two

The Vikings used a strong start and even better finish at the plate en route to a 13-2 win in seven innings.

Goihl, Fink, and Fiala each homered in the dominant win.

Goihl and Fiala also finished with a team-most three hits in the game.

Fiala's five RBI were a new season high.

Dalton Allen (3-0) was credited with his third victory of the year. Allen picked up the win in relief of Kalib Mauch. The Harrisburg, S.D. native went 2.1 innings on the mound, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out two batters.

Augustana exploded for four runs right out the gate thanks to back-to-back home runs from Fiala and Fink.

Goihl's solo shot in the bottom of the third inning made it a four-run game at 5-1. For Goihl, the homer was the senior's 12th this year, setting a new career high.

The Vikings made their move and put this one out of reach in the bottom of the sixth, scoring their six runs on four hits. A bases-clearing triple by Berg highlighted the big inning at the plate for Augustana.

Troy Pilkington came in and sealed the game in the top half of the seventh, giving up just one hit in four batters faced.

Augustana will return to action with a home-and-home series against Southwest Minnesota State beginning on Saturday with a doubleheader in Marshall, Minn. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
