Vikings sweep Peacocks to close out regular season

FAYETTE, Iowa – Led by a late three-run home run by Alex Fink, the Augustana baseball team rallied in the top of the ninth by scoring five runs to pick up the victory in game two against Upper Iowa, giving the Vikings the sweep on Sunday to close out the regular season.

Augustana's comeback win helped it wrap up the regular season on a 12-game winning streak and secure the No. 3 seed in the upcoming NSIC/US Bank Tournament. The Vikings finished the year 34-15 (25-9 NSIC), while the Peacocks ended their year at 19-31 (11-25 NSIC).

Fink was an absolute terror at the plate for Augustana during the four-game series, finishing with a .588 batting average, and a 1.765 slugging percentage. The former Springfield High star also crushed six home runs and recorded 16 RBI and scored 11 runs.

Game One

The Vikings used a four-run inning at the plate in the sixth to pull away from UIU in an 8-3 win.

Augustana scored its eight runs on 14 hits.

Justin Warne tied a season high with three hits. Warne also had an RBI and run scored.

Fink went 2-for-4, including hitting his 10th homer of the year.

Jack Goihl added two RBI in the win.

Jacob Blank (3-0) picked up the victory in a relief role. Blank went 2.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits.

Upper Iowa went up 2-0 after the first two innings of play after a failed pickoff attempt at first base by Michael Letkewicz allowed for the runner to score from third for the Peacocks.

An RBI single to right field by Lucas Wilber got the Vikings on the board in the top half of the third. Wilber drove the ball out to right center, bringing in Lucas Barry from third, who opened the inning with a leadoff single.

Fink gave Augustana its first lead of the day at 3-2 with a two-run shot to left field in the top of the fourth inning.

The Peacocks immediately responded with a leadoff home run from Colton Janssen to start the bottom of the fourth to tie things back up.

The Vikings made their move at the plate in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to go up for good. Goihl's two-out, two-RBI double to right center field capped of the big inning for Augustana.

An error in the field for UIU gave the Vikings a run in the top half of the seventh, making it 8-3. Bryce Berg led off with a double to center field to start. Berg then was able to cross home plate after Patrick O'Donnell reached on the error by Upper Iowa.

A strike out by Troy Pilkington for the third and final out brought an end to the Peacocks' comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh.

Game Two

Augustana used late rally in the top of the ninth to get a 12-8 victory against UIU.

The Vikings tied a season high with five home runs, the fifth time this season that they have hit at least four homers in a game.

Goihl belted his NSIC-leading 15th home run of 2015 in the victory, part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Berg and Warne each homered as well.

Upper Iowa pushed its lead to two with its turn at the plate in the fifth on a Janssen solo shot to left center field with two outs.

The Peacocks added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-5 off a three-error play in the field by the Vikings.

Patrick Fiala cut the UIU lead to one with a triple to center that scored Goihl and Marcus O'Neill from first and second base.

Goihl singled to left field to bring in Wilber to tie the game up. Fiala immediately reached on an error to put runners on the corners with Fink set to bat. The Springfield, Minn. native took full advantage of Upper Iowa's inability to get out of the inning, crushing a three-run bomb to right center for the play of the game. Berg added an insurance run right after the big blast with a solo shot of his own to right center to make it 12-8 Vikings.

Colton Vien came in to close things out in the bottom of the seventh for Augustana. After giving up a leadoff single to start, Vien settled in by getting a 4-6-3 ground-ball double play to clear the base paths.
