SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana baseball team couldn't overcome a cold day swinging the bats on Friday afternoon, losing 5-0 to No. 1 seed St. Cloud State in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament semi-final game. The loss snapped the Vikings' 14-game winning streak.
Augustana was held to six hits, only the third time in the last 18 games the Vikings have been held under 10 hits.
Alex Fink led the team with two hits.
Ryne Lees (5-3) turned in a quality start in the loss, giving up three earned runs in seven innings. The right-hander also had three strikeouts in the loss.
St. Cloud State got the first lead of the game with a three-run inning in the top of the third. The Huskies got their three runs on three hits. SCSU was able to take advantage of a costly throw by Fink to third base that allowed for the first run to score from second, opening the opportunity for St. Cloud State build its lead.
Garrett Harrison continued his no-hit bid by retiring the Viking side for a third straight inning, keeping his perfect game intact.
Augustana was able to end Harrison's perfect game in the bottom of the fourth inning by getting their first runner on base after
Jack Goihl walked with two outs. The Vikings weren't able to do much with the baserunner as
Patrick Fiala popped out in foul territory to end the inning.
Fink finally got Augustana its first hit of the day with a leadoff single up the middle to start the bottom of the fifth. The Vikings were unable to take advantage, grounding into a 4-6-3 double play two batters later to bring the inning to a close.
Lees kept the Augustana close with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth, his second straight inning of retiring the Huskies in order.
SCSU pulled away on two-out, two-run home run by Brandon Arnold in the seventh, upping its lead to 5-0.
Back-to-back two-out hits by
Lucas Barry and
Justin Warne gave the Vikings their best chance at scoring in the bottom half of the eighth. A
Jacob James strikeout at the plate brought the inning to a close, keeping Augustana off the scoreboard.
The Vikings were unable to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth after getting runners on the first and second base with two outs.
Alex Beals, in to pinch hit, struck out for the final out of the game, giving SCSU the win.
Augustana is back in action for an elimination game on Friday night at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Northern State/Minnesota Duluth matchup.
