KANEOHE, Hawaii – Karlee Koopman struck out seven batters in a complete game victory in game two to lead No. 20 Augustana University softball (2-1) to a 6-1 win over Hawaii Pacific (1-1) and salvage a split in the twinbill. Hawaii Pacific won the opener 8-7 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Game oneHawaii Pacific scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn an 8-7 win over Augustana in game one of today's doubleheader. Augustana scored two in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead but the Vikings committed their only two errors of the game in the bottom of the seventh to allow HPU to take the lead and the game.Augustana finished the game with eight hits getting two from
Sarah Kennedy and
Maggie Kadrlik. Kennedy finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kadrlik was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI.
Carley Pickett earned the loss in the circle after tossing 6.1 innings and allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits. Kristen Caskey earned the win giving up seven hits, six earned, on eight hits.
HPU's Kristen Caskey got two quick outs in the top of the first inning but the Vikings got a two-out rally started with a sharp single by Kennedy back up the middle.
Maggie Kadrlik and
Shannon Petersen were then both hit by a pitch to load the bases for
Morgan Beaner with two outs.
Beaner then singled through the right side of the infield to drive in two runs and Petersen came around to score on an error by the HPU right fielder giving Augustana a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Sharks answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning getting an RBI single from Kayla Sanchez with runners on second to make the score 3-1. Later in the inning, Kiana Wolfe walked with the bases loaded to bring the Sharks within one at 3-2.
Augustana responded with two more runs in the top of the second to push its lead back up to three at 5-2.
Maddie Merriam led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a fielder's choice and an error by HPU on
Abby Chandler's at-bat.
Carly Peterson then singled to left to load the bases and Pickett earned a bases loaded walk to drive in a run and give herself a 4-2 lead. Two batters later, Kadrlik delivered an RBI single putting Augustana in front 5-2.
The Sharks cut Augustana's lead down to one in the home half of the second inning on a two-run home run by Sanchez to make the score 5-4.
After two scoreless innings, Hawaii Pacific broke through for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take its first lead of the game at 6-5. The Sharks loaded the bases and scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Wolfe and Stevens before Pickett was able to end the threat with two straight strikeouts to leave the bases loaded.
Augustana rallied right back scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead at 7-6. Chandler led off the inning with an infield single.
Sydney Monsour pinch-ran for Chandler and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Peterson. Monsour moved up to third on a ground out by Pickett and came around to score on an RBI single by Kennedy.
Kadrlik then drilled a double to left center field to drive in Kennedy all the way from first base and put Augustana back in front 7-6.
The Sharks rallied once again in the bottom of the seventh scoring two runs on two hits and two Augustana errors to complete the comeback and hand the Vikings their first loss of the season.
Game two Koopman earned her second straight win getting the complete game victory in the circle. She struck out seven batters and allowed just one run on six hits.
The Vikings finished the game with a season-high 16 hits with six players each getting two hits. The first four batters in the order each had two hits in game two.
Peterson finished 2 for 3 with a double and a triple while driving in one and scoring another. Pickett was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Kennedy finished 2 for 4 with two RBI.
Augustana had five extra-base hits on the day, including four doubles and a triple. Kadrlik was 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and Beaner finished 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
The Vikings got off to a fast start in game two scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Carly Peterson led off the game with a double to left center and Pickett followed with a walk to put two on with no outs for Kennedy. Kennedy delivered an RBI single to score Peterson.
Kadrlik then singled to right field and Pickett was thrown out at home but Beaner and
Emily Wilson delivered back-to-back RBI singles to put the Vikings in front 3-0.
Hawaii Pacific got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning cutting Augustana's lead to two at 3-1. Gabriella Fordiani started the one-out rally for the Sharks with a double down the left field line. Kiana Wolfe drove in HPU's first run with an RBI single up the middle to make the score 3-1. The Sharks got two runners on after Kristy Washizki singled on a bunt and moved Mari Kajiwara up to third after a throwing error by the Vikings.
Koopman got Sienna Santiago to ground out back to the circle to end the inning and leave two runners in scoring position.
Augustana added some insurance in the top of the sixth inning pushing two runs across to make it a 5-1 game. Chandler legged out an infield single to start the inning and after a groundout by Peterson, Pickett drove Chandler in with a double to the gap in right center. Kennedy then drove Pickett in with a single to left to push Augustana's lead to four heading to the home half of the sixth.
Augustana padded its four-run lead with another run in the top of the seventh inning. Beaner doubled to right center to start the inning but she was tagged out between second and third after a grounder to short by
Emily Wilson.
Mounsour pinch-ran for Wilson and advanced to second when
Maggie Dunnett, who pinch-hit for
Kaylea Schorr, reached on an error. Monsour was thrown out at home on a single to center by Merriam but Peterson walked with the bases loaded to drive in Augustana's sixth run of the game to put the Vikings in front 6-1 headed to the home half of the seventh.
Koopman got two quick outs to start the bottom of the seventh but HPU was able to load the bases with two straight singles and a walk before Koopman got a ground ball out to end the game.
Augustana will conclude its six-game trip to the Aloha State with a doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii at 4 p.m. (CT).
