SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana soccer team finished the 2016 regular season on a high note by defeating crosstown rival USF on Sunday afternoon. Hannah Keirstead scored 28 seconds into overtime giving Augustana a hard fought 1-0 victory in enemy territory. The Vikings improved to 11-4-3 (10-2-3 NSIC) and will be the No. 4 seed in the NSIC tournament.
Augustana and USF went back-and-forth during regulation but neither team could come up with a goal. When the match went to overtime the Vikings ended it quickly and moved to 7-0 all-time against the Cougars.
Keirstead's overtime goal was the quickest overtime goal in Augustana history with the goal coming 28 seconds into the extra period. It was also Keirstead's first career goal.
Augustana remained unbeaten in overtime matches during the season improving to 3-0-3. Their six overtime games are the most since the Vikings played seven in 2013.
Taylor Machacek was stout in the net again for the Vikings recording her fifth shutout of the season which is good for a tie for second in a single season at Augustana. Machacek recorded seven saves and improved to 10-4-2 on the season.
The Vikings outshot the Cougars 13-11, but USF had seven shots on goal compared to only four by Augustana.
Next the Vikings will compete in the NSIC tournament. Augustana is tentatively set to host Minnesota Duluth on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at Morstad Field. The NSIC will release the tournament bracket later tonight.
