Balanced Attack Pushes Vikings Past Golden Bears, 64-50

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana women's basketball team improved to 7-2 on the season and start NSIC play off 2-0 with their 64-50 win over Concordia-St. Paul. The Vikings extended their winning streak to six games. Augustana had every player that entered the game record at least two points and two rebounds during the contest.

Naomi Rust led the Vikings with 12 points on 5-9 shooting. Other Viking in double figures were Logan O'Farrell (11 points) and Shelby Selland (10 points). Selland also tied a season-high with eight rebounds. Lynsey Prosser recorded six points and a team-high seven assists on the game.

As a team the Vikings shot 40 percent from the field and attempted a season-low 16 three pointers. Augustana recorded double-digits steals (13) for the eighth time in nine games on the season.

The Vikings started the game off slow missing their first six shots of the game and the Golden Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Prosser ended the drought with a fast break layup with up six minutes left in the first quarter. Selland scored the next six points for the Vikings giving them their first lead at 8-7 with three minutes left in the first. The Golden Bears closed out the quarter with four straight points to take an 11-7 lead.

At the beginning of the second quarter the Golden Bears stretched their lead to seven before the Vikings started to mount a comeback. A pair of Selland free throws ignited a 10-0 run for the Vikings giving the Vikings a 23-17 edge. The Golden Bears clawed back into the lead with a 7-0 run of their own. CSP took a 26-25 lead into halftime.

The Vikings shot 16 percent from the field in the first quarter, but vastly improved in the second quarter shooting 43 percent to finish the half having shot 29 percent. The Golden Bears outrebounded the Vikings in the first half 27-20.

After a back-and-fourth start to the third quarter the Vikings went on a 15-2 run to finish the quarter and blow the game open. Rust started the run with a pair of free throws and scored six of her 12 points during it. The Vikings ended the quarter with a 46-36 lead.

In the fourth quarter the Vikings lead swelled to 17, before the game concluded with Augustana winning by a score of 64-50.

Viking Player of the Game
Naomi Rust led the Vikings in scoring with 12 points. Rust scored six of her 12 points during a pivotal 15-2 run in the third quarter to separate the Vikings from the Golden Bears. This is the first time this season Rust has led the Vikings in scoring.
