Stingy defense propels Augustana women's basketball to victory

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Augustana University women's basketball team (19-6, 13-6 NSIC) was out shot Friday night in Marshall, Minn. but used their stingy defense to begin their final regular season road trip with a victory over Southwest Minnesota State (5-20, 3-16 NSIC) 70-60.

The Vikings jumped on the Mustangs from the opening tip scoring 21-points in the opening quarter. The Vikings used a strong first-quarter to grab a nine point lead early in the second quarter but the Mustangs would not go away. The Mustangs erased the Viking's lead and didn't allow Augustana to score in the final 2:02 of the second-quarter as they went into the break with their only lead of the half, 35-34.

The Vikings came out of the locker room unphased by how the second-quarter ended as they slowly took their deficit and turned it into a 10-point lead, on the back of a 20-5 run between the third and fourth quarters. After making just two three-pointers in the first half they made five in the final two quarters on their way to defeating the Mustangs 70-60.
