SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Division No. 1 seed Augustana University men's basketball (25-2) is set to take on South Division No. 5 seed University of Sioux Falls (17-12) in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon.
The Vikings, ranked No. 4 in the NABC Top 25 Poll and No. 1 in the NCAA Central Region rankings, opened the NSIC Tournament with a 91-57 win over Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday night at the Sioux Falls Arena.
Augustana owns an 8-6 all-time record in NSIC Tournament play. The Vikings are the defending NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament Champions after winning the program's first conference tournament championship last season.
Augustana enters Saturday night's game riding a six-game winning streak. The Vikings are averaging 91.3 points per game in 2015-16 while ranking second in the nation with a +19.9 scoring margin on the season. Augustana is shooting 50.4 percent from the field, including 42.8 percent from 3-point range which ranks fourth in the country.
The Vikings are led in scoring by back-to-back NSIC Player of the Year,
Daniel Jansen. Jansen is averaging 20.2 points per game to go along with 7.7 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 52.5 percent from the field and ranks second on the team with 45 3-pointers on the year.
Casey Schilling, who was recently named the NSIC's Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, is averaging 19 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Schilling was named the MVP of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament last season after averaging 23 points and 11.5 rebounds while shooting 55 percent from the field in four NSIC Tournament games.
Alex Richter was named to the All-NSIC First Team for the second straight season on Thursday and enters Saturday night's game averaging 13.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2 percent from the field and 50.5 percent from 3-point range. Sophomore guard
Jordan Spencer was named All-NSIC Second Team for the second straight season and is averaging 8.7 points, 6.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game. Spencer led the NSIC in assists in 2015-16 and currently ranks fourth in the nation in assists per game and second with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.7.
Saturday's night's game against USF will be the third meeting between the two teams this season. Augustana has won both previous meetings defeating the Cougars 88-61 at the Sioux Falls Arena on Jan. 2 before picking up a 79-71 road win over the Cougars on Feb. 13. Augustana is 34-27 all-time against USF and has won 24 of the last 26 meetings over the Cougars, including six straight wins.
USF was the only road team to win a first round game in the NSIC Tournament and enters Saturday night's game with a record of 17-12.
