SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 1 seed Augustana University men's basketball is set for its NCAA Central Region Tournament semifinal matchup against No. 4 seed University of Nebraska-Kearney at 7:30 Sunday night at the Sanford Pentagon.
The Vikings (29-2) will play in the NCAA Central Region semifinals for the second straight season after picking up a 100-85 win over No. 8 seed Harding University on Saturday night.
Nebraska-Kearney (21-11) earned a 79-67 win over conference rival Fort Hays State on Saturday night to advance to tonight's semifinal matchup.
Augustana and Nebraska-Kearney have played eight times since meeting for the first time in 1958. Augustana is 3-5 all-time against the Lopers and has won back-to-back games in the series. The Vikings defeated the Lopers 81-69 in Sioux Falls on Nov. 29, 2006 and 97-72 on Nov. 23, 2007 in Vermillion, S.D.
Augustana and Nebraska-Kearney have never met in the NCAA Tournament.
The Vikings put up 100 points last night against Harding, marking the seventh time scoring 100-plus points in a game this season. Augustana enters tonight's game averaging 91.7 points per game while allowing 72.7. The Vikings are shooting 50.9 percent from the field as a team, including 42.2 percent from behind the arc.
Senior forward
Daniel Jansen put up 32 points in last night's win over Harding putting his season average up to 21 points per game on the year. The 32-point performance marked his seventh career game scoring 30 or more points.
All five of Augustana's starters put up double-figures in last night's win. Jansen,
Casey Schilling,
Alex Richter,
Jordan Spencer and
Adam Beyer have all scored in double-figures in two straight games.
Sophomore guard
Jordan Spencer registered his second career double-double on Saturday against Harding putting up 10 points, 10 assists to go along with five rebounds.
Nebraska-Kearney won its first NCAA Tournament game since 2007 with Saturday night's win over Fort Hays State. The Lopers were led by Connor Beranek who scored 37 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead his team past the Tigers. Beranek is averaging 25 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Lopers and is shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
UNK averages 78.6 points per game while allowing 73 points per contest. The Lopers are shooting 48.3 percent from the field, including 37.6 percent from behind the arc. UNK averages 17.9 free throws made per game and is shooting 81.5 percent from the stripe.
